    What about the plugin?

    Buffer battery pack...

    Double the health risk......

Also cleaner air around the car.....so kras exhaust gasses to push away those battery fums....

I was (and am) a real twidget.
Don't get me wrong...I love and respect nukes. Heck, I can even "say" nuke now without immediately preceding it with "F$#@ing"..... now that I've been out subs for a few decades. :D
I was signed up for the program but a cousin's former boyfriend browbeat me without mercy until I switched out. My recruiter was an MT1(SS), and I had already volunteered for subs, so he didn't put up too much of a kick about it. I was a pretty stupid kid. I probably would have wound up being a turd rancher had I stayed in the nuclear power program.....and besides, who was President when we built our last commercial reactor?
More importantly....who will be President when we build our next one???
Not exactly a growth industry....if you know what I mean. :(

    Thanks for your service, shipmate!

.......we now return you to our regularly scheduled dental mystery already in progress.

    ^ Well......
That's probably a topic for another forum.
We could do a "this versus that" over the whole nuclear program, but liberals do not have what you would call a very highly developed sense of humor. Somebody would get their little knickers in a knot and run screaming to a Mod.....next thing you know....censor city!!!

It's just not worth it, especially when we're abundantly blesses with all the hydrocarbons that we could possibly burn in my lifetime.....probably my kids too.
One good thing about the ICE-----especially PHEVs.
    Multiple fuel sources. ;)

thanks for the info. so far I have taken it into toyota to get it looked at and they found nothing (it was the winter, and the smell also seemed to be low at that time). now it seems to be higher (or it could just be my senses).

I also contacted an air test company however they do not check hydrogen sulphide gas, so my best guess would be to get a detector myself and do it myself.

however, different detectors detect specific gasses (unless i want to spend a lot of money and get a multi one.. which i don't : - ( ) I may even hire one actually

may i ask what gas i'm looking for, if it's coming from the lead acid battery (which i believe it is). hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide, or sulphur trioxide.

this equation from wikipedia's lead acid battey page indicates it may be sulphur dioxide, and not hydrogen sulphide, as some others may have suggested ?

    Positive plate reaction: PbSO4(s) + 2H2O(l) → PbO2(s) + HSO

    4
    (aq) + 3H+(aq) + 2
    -

    many thanks

isn't the battery vented outside ???? I think your theory is little bit off how about other things in the car which are there 24/7 ??? are those immune to this ???

good grief you came up with ALL this, and let us hanging for almost 6 months ????

just sell the prius and save on detectors ( you can just donate that money to NPR).

Only a tipp, have you checked your airfilter ... it is known to house mice and other possible things and if you have a dead one there you would smell it.

Several of us have made fun of the OP, but I just noticed Prii do cause aging. I have aged nearly 3 years since I bought mine.

My dentist just purchased a Prius for his wife. This proves it's not the car, because I doubt he wants to do free dental work on his wife - times are tough! Unless, he wants to get rid of his wife... hmmm... Damn it! I should've given my old Prius to my x-wife instead of the Scion, I could've saved on alimony!

The original 12 volt battery is externally vented, yes. Several here have (unwisely in my opinion) used unvented batteries inside their Prius. All one can do is try to talk them out of it.

I fixed the formula for you. There is no SO2 in it. You really should review some basic chemistry before making unfounded accusations.

friendly_jacek - i'm not accusing anyone - this is my hypothesis , hence the thread. different ppl have confirmed this smell to me, except toyota.

thankyou for your correction of the formula

what i am curious to know, is should one be looking for hydrogen sulphide or sulphuric acid gas if this was the case

One should be replacing the battery with a compatible AGM battery...either from Toyota (OEM) or a reputable supplier.

just curious ... do you drink softdrinks on a regular bases ?? how about wine ??? or like any acidic food/fruits ... THOSE can affect your teeths a whole lot more then the prius...

I ask you again if any of your "suspected" gases are present in a concentration to affect your teeth wouldn't those gases affect car parts, seat covers especially close to the battery ??? or clothes. eyes etc .. you are in the car what 1-2-3 hours a day but rest of the car is stays there closed in..
