It is very rare that a extended warranty will pay for itself. Most of the time if there is a breakdown that is covered, the amount of the repair cost versus the cost of the warranty is considerably less. As others have stated, your best bet is put the money in the bank rather than spend it on a warranty. The dealers sell them because they know they will make money. It is sort of like gambling in a casino. We all know that the house generally wins.

Invest the money in a well managed mutual fund. The Prius is known for reliability.

I believe you can extend your warranty with Toyota while the vehicle is currently under warranty. That is, before your new car warranty runs out you can decide to extend if you plan on keeping your vehicle for any extended timeframe. If you like the "peace of mind" knowing you have a warranty with Toyota you can extend not having to make a decision right now. You can go to any Toyota dealer before your new vehicle warranty expires. I would also shop at least three dealers as you will get different quotes!

That is a decision only you can make, but I would wait till your existing guarantee is about to expire. You will then have a better idea how reliable the car is, and make your mind up then.

I just purchased the extended warranty yesterday. It was about the only thing I didn't research on this site before I made my purchase. You can get out of it for $25 within the first 30 days, which I may do. I basically paid the $25 up front to do further research because I was told it had to be done as part of the deal. The fine print is very clear about $25 within the first 30 days, prorated thereafter. They will put the amount you paid for it towards the loan which didn't bother me.
