    To all of the posts:

I drove for a 4 days with the Check Engine Light.
I drive 180 miles a day. That is 8 power cycles. (Actually, when the light first came on, I figured gas cap immediately and shut off and restarted car around 8 times in the parking lot at work)

Local Auto Parts stores, if they are a chain, will not clear the code in states that have emissions checks. (Massachusetts is my state, and every store I ran into wouldn't do it, all cited the same reason)
This does exclude states that don't care about the light, and mom and pop places that don't care what the state says.

I'm not guessing. I went and spoke to the Service Director. This is a guy I known for years, he's the boss of the service department. He stated that the Prius does not clear EVAP code automatically.

I don't know about 40 Cycles. That seems pointless. But pointless sometimes seems to rule the day.

Glad you got it figured out...and hopefully they didn't charge you to look at the car. I find that Toyota can be pretty generous in most cases, and not nickel and dime for small things like that. Yikes, you do drive a lot of miles a day! I thought the 60 I drive round-trip was a bit extreme, but not so much. Your post about the emissions checks makes me wonder if there are any states without them these days?

The code needs to be reset by an OBDII tool. Even the CEL turns off after awhile, the code just turn into a pending code and stays if not cleared.

My light came on today. Hope it's just the gas cap.

Check to see if it's tight. If it's loose, you can be pretty sure.

Then find yourself a local Autozone / Pepboys / Advance Autoparts / etc.

They will read the codes for you. Depending on local / regional store rules, they may or maynot clear the code for you.

It will not clear automatically. You can have the dealer clear it. Mine did it for no charge, but honestly it's the dealer's discretion if they are going to charge or not. (Yes, it only take's 5 minutes for a tech to read and clear it, but it's still a tech's time)

This just happened to me yesterday. I took it to the dealership today. I have only had the car for 3 weeks. They did reset it for me at no charge but told me it would $55 if it happened again and that it is not a warranty issue. If that happens at every fill up, it could cost more than a car payment. I asked if he sees the problem a lot and I was told yes, but not as much as it used to be.

I had this happen to me after about a month of owning the car. My first fillup in fact! I remembered closing the cap and hearing the click. But when the CEL came on I thought about the gas cap before coming to this forum. After reading you comments I went to Autozone and the code responses were pretty much useless. I was told that adding a small amount of petroleum jelly to the gasket will help seal it. I haven't done this yet. I wanted to post it here to get all your thoughts on this. BTW, the light is now gone after about 3 days.

Replace the cap. The jelly trick only works for a while because gasoline is/acts like a solvent.

Just see: a ScanGauge can clear CEL's.

I was perusing the forum as a few days ago my CEL came on out of the blue one night after work when I started my 2013 Prius up to drive the short 10 miles home. It has about 89,400 miles on it and I was planning to take it for the 90,000 mile service soon anyway.

This morning, I took it in and had them check it out plus do a lot of other things (new tires, alignment, etc.). They called me back a few minutes ago to tell me the CEL was a sensor and also that the head gasket was leaking (otherwise known as a blown head gasket)!

Luckily, when I purchased my 2013 Prius model 5 new, I bought the 7 year, 100,000 mile extended warranty. The dealer called the warranty people who said they HAVE to send out an inspector to finalize the claim.

This will be only the 2nd time in my long history of owning new cars that the extended warranty has paid off substantially.

They will let me know what the total repair is going to look like once they get into it further.
