Any recommendations for a level 2 EVSE?

I have a 30 amp circuit that I am going to re-purpose for an outdoor level 2 EVSE. It is from a retired swimming pool, so the line is already outside running down the side of my home. I have not checked the wire, but it is most likely 10/3 with a ground. I plan to install a dryer type outlet on a post in the front yard so that the EVSE can be easily removed in the future. I plan on doing the work myself after getting advice from a neighbor who is an electrician. The EVSE would also be attached to the post.

I would like to install an EVSE, with a dryer type plug. I know the PIP is limited in what it can draw, but my next electric vehicle might have an improved charger. I have done some research and found that the 30 amp EVSEs require a 40 amp circuit.

Does anyone know what brand/model EVSE can draw the maximum amps/kWh on a 30 amp household circuit? I suspect that I am limited to a 25 amp EVSE.

I'm working on a group buy for a nice unit, if you can hold off for a few days, please do. Also, since you are in NY, you can save up to 80% on your EVSE (check the ChargeNY site for more info).

I am not in a rush. I need a EVSE that will run on a 30 amp circuit and not a 30 amp EVSE that runs on a 40 amp circuit.

Your best choice would be to convert the Toyota OEM EVSE to 240VAC operation and the most economic way. Any other one will pull more than 5 Amps from the circuit, above their rated Amps ratings and depending of the total feed wire length and gauge.
Drier's sockets are not suitable nor legal code for outdoors installations, with the exception of being in a water tight enclosure and a wire drip loop.

Why don't you start by checking the cable gauge you've got? It may be thick enough to support 40 Amp, which means you only need to change a breaker to make it a 40 A circuit. Most EVSE's are 15A or 30A. I haven't heard of a 20A unit. As you noted, it's kind of a moot point, because the Prius won't draw more than about 11A, I think.

Another thing is that most codes won't allow a dryer-type plug outdoors. You have to splice the cord inside a sealed electrical box... which is cheaper anyway.

Assuming I have 10 gauge wire, this is the only EVSE that seems to be designed for a 30 amp circuit. I will defer to my electrician neighbor on code requirements. I won't have anything installed that is not up to code.

I don't know anything about this brand. The price is not bad at $595.00.

I know the upgrade makes economic sense, but I am getting tired of taking the EVSE out and plugging it in. I do a lot of short trips on the weekends, and I am looking forward to the convenience and speed of a permanent level 2. If I am going to invest in permanent (or semi-permanent) EVSE, then it makes sense to get one that will support a car with the ability to draw more than the PIP.

I will be very happy if I find 8 gauge wire, or if my electrician tells me I can replace the 30 amp breaker with a 40.

If it will be a second one and type of permanent install, the Clipper Creek makes some sense about pricing and the amperage range that it can pull out of your present electrical installation with out modifying anything.
As per the installation, I will suggest you to install the EVSE in a protected enclosure in a suitable pole.
It is a theft deterrent and a protected housing for the EVSE wand.
In witch part of LI are you?

Leviton is one of the companies I'm working with (already have a relationship with them), but they are a slow moving company.

:)Good choice for the Prius Plug In. This is a new model to the Leviton Level 2 charger I purchased (same specs) in February. Amazon sells the same charger for $749.00, sometimes two day free shipping, WITHOUT the install kit. I passed on the installation kit which adds about $69 and in most reviews states it's not needed. It does not include a 20a GFI receptacle or circuit breaker (one or the other) which is required for outdoor or garage installation. If you have a unused 12/3 wired circuit which I had, it made my installation simple. All I had to do was change the electrical receptacle to the correct NEMA type used by the charger and install a 20a GFI circuit breaker for the 20a circuit I used. I didn't realize that Lowes and Home Depot do not stock 240v GFIs or GFI receptacles. I had to order two 20a GFI circuit breakers (one for home and one for work) from Lowes online at about $80 each. My only complaint, the model I have, and it appears the model above use a 30-40a rated car electrical cord which is very thick, almost impossible to wrap up, and way more than what's required for a 16a charger.

80% off seems like a no brainer. Is it 80% up to 1k and 50% from 1k-5k it looks like for NY.

Is there any requirements on what charger is good enough to meet the requirements for the rebate? that include paying someone to install the charger as well right?

I still need to contact a CPA/IRS about the 50% NY tax aspect of it, but supposedly it's any tax credit. That said, I just ordered this AeroVironment Level 2 EVSE, since it's on sale for $800, and that 30% federal tax credit as a sure thing for most people.

We sell Level 2 equipment that is ADA and OSHA compliant. We also have a power share unit that can work with an existing service sharing power with a dryer or electric stove. 10/3 would not ne proper wiring for a 30 AMP charger. So a 20 amp would be needed. However if you have an electric dryer or stove with 40 AMPS our power share would work for you. You would benefit from faster charging time with a 30 AMP unit over a 20.

:confused:Wouldn't 10/2 (indoor/outdoor) wire be sufficient for a 30 amp Level 2 charger? Also, my understanding, their is no charge time benefit (less than 1.5 hour) with anything over a 16A Level 2 charger on the Prius Plug In?

correct, it would simply be planning for the future.
