Scion Wheels on a Prius

    I know this has been discussed before, but it usually evolves into a discussion about lowering the car and getting different springs.

    Can I put 17" Scion tC wheels/tires on my stock 2010 Prius without any modifications to the car or wheels? The tires on the wheels I'm considering buying are 245/45 R17. I know all about the MPG hit.

    I know there will be a gap without lowering the car, but I'm more concerned whether or not the wheels will rub while turning.

    In other words, can I install, balance, and drive? Or is it not as simple as that?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Double check your size. The new tc comes with a 225/45/18 and the old one had a 215/45/17 or 225/40/18.

    The size you listed would be way too large in diameter for a Prius.

    The rims have aftermarket tires on them and the set is in a local parts yard. So, the 245s are too wide?

    They are too tall. The OE 15" tire is 25" tall. The 245/45/17 is 25.7" tall. It's huge! lol

    It would likely rub when turning. I'm not 100% sure of that but I'm pretty sure you wouldn't like the way it looks anyway.

    Can you get the wheels then ditch (sell) the tires?

    Nah. The tires aren't in good enough condition that somebody would buy them by themselves. The yard was asking $450 for the wheels and tires, which is a decent price for both. I doubt I'd be able to sell the tires alone for much.

    To put things in perspective for you...

    I ran 245/40/18 tires on a 18x8.5 +48 wheel with the car lowered. 245/40/18 did rub the inner fender well liner slightly on bumps. I probably would have damaged the fender if my car went full compression in a turn. If I wasn't lowered, I don't think it would have rubbed at all.

    If 245s are a temporary solution for you until you get better tires, I personally don't see an issue with fitment.

    You should take note of the above and comments from others and assess the risk in that there is a possibility of fitment issues if you decide to go down that route of using 245 wide tires. You should also input your wheel and tire data into one of the many different wheel and tire calculators. I prefer Online Wheel & Tyre Fitment calculator. Offset, Tyre stretch and Rolling Radius calculator.

    You can use 245/40/18, 18x8.5 +48 as the extreme outside limit for fitment. There is not much room at all for less offset or a wider wheel without having to run an non-OE alignment (Camber), or modifying the outer fender well. I'm not sure how much clearance I had left on the inner fender well.

    You shouldn't go wider than 225 if you have a choice.

    It's also worth noting that only the 1st gen wheels fit. 05-10 tC had a 5x100 bolt pattern, the current gen (11-13) has a 5x114.3 pattern.

    E-mail or Call Tirerack and ask them how wide a 15 inch wheel and tire can be safely put on your car.
