Prius 2007 - are some of them without smart key option?

Just bought a used 2007 Prius Touring model, looks like it was with some basic or no package. It came from a third owner with only one fob. This fob does not open the doors or starts the car when its pocket, but one needs to put it into the slot then the car starts with Start button.

We did some reading on this forum, researched quite a few posts and since we do not have the original post decided to go to dealer, buy new fob and have them reset the system. To our surprise dealer told us that this car does not have some door button so it is not equipped with option to get a matching fob to open door or start car when fob is in the pocket. The only option they offered us was another fob that needs to be inserted to a slot or pressed a button to open doors.

Should we trust the dealer or take to another dealer? I am baffled as all our research showed that all Prius second generation have remote fob operating as RFID device while in pocket and setting it right is a matter of getting the right fob and dealer reprogramming the device.

    Thanks.

on my car that had the remote start, there was a main switch to turn it on or off under the steering wheel.

If it was in the off position, you would have to insert the fob.

If the car is equipped with SKS, there will be a button toward the bottom of the dash, under the steering wheel to turn SKS on or off. Also, there will be a black rubber button by the door handle on both front doors and the back hatch. All Touring Editions included this feature. If you don't have SKS, you were misinformed when you purchased the car. If that is the case, the vehicle was misrepresented to you and you probably paid too much. I have seen multiple Prii for sale on dealer lots, including Toyota, that were not Touring Editions, but labeled that way. They know they can get more money for a T.E. than a non T.E. I would be really upset if it was me...

A dead FOB battery is a good possibility. When i bought my 2005 Prius several years ago my FOB battery was dead.salesman pushed Fob in slot to start car.I checked and found switch under steering column was off also.so I would check if you have SKS, That is if you have the black buttons next to door handles and on hatch. you can pull up cargo floor in back to see if you have SKS reciever module on left bottom side. SKS was an option on both the Touring and the standard Prius in 2007..

SKS was not an option on the 07 Touring Edition. It was included with the Touring Edition.

When I first bought my '05, the SKS did not work. I had to slide the key out to unlock the door, and put the fob in the slot to start the car. Then I took it to a place that programs keys, and they "added" the key to my SKS. Not sure if this is something you can do yourself, or have to have some special hardware. But once they did that everything worked fine.

many thanks to everyone for replies.
    1. I am 90% sure it is touring edition since
    a) VIN check online stated it is touring
    b) Tires are in Touring size, original OEMs 195s.
Actually the previous owner did not know the type or package so I am a bit in the dark. I understand one can change tires and rims if desired to emulate Touring but then they would probably have upgraded tires from OEMs. Also how does one fake VIn record online, I think it is run by CarFax company.
    2) The only key key fob is apparently not original since it does not have anywhere 3 magic numbers (FCC/etc) which allow one to match fob when buying online second pair
    3) Wife is now still with the car in dealer shop and they say apparently there is no black button on the door. There is some button under the steering wheel but since I do not have car with me I cannot say what this button does (could be something else, or for telescoping wheel)
    4) Previous owner said they just changed the battery.
    5) I am not 100% sure what package this model is. It does not have 3.5mm jack (no music streaming from smartphone alas) so must be package must be something very basic, like package 0:)
Manual is generic and says Smart Key if equipped, but it is probably made for many markets and not just US and I assume used regular key in some configurations. I cannot comprehend why one would build Start button and a slot and leave owner with clunky system for starting.

So I guess when wife gets home I will check for black buttons and if they are not available assume it cannot be done. I guess to get a second pair of key fob to keep as spare when first gets lost I can get it from ebay and do chicken procedure documented in many posts on this forum, right? if it does not do SKS anyway I assume DIY procedure should work and no dealer needed?

On yahoo autos, this is listed as standard feature for Prius 2007 touring:
    • Keyless Entry Operated Via Key Fob With Audible and Visual Confirmation
    • but SKS is listed in Options
    • Smart Key System (comes with some package)
Guess no dice for me to keep fob in pocket.
Now I guess I will just get second fob off ebay and program it to be a backup, but cannot use it in hands free mode. No big deal but SKS is really nice when it works.

you can also call Toyota Customer care and give them the VIN number and see if they can look it up for you.

all touring models has the smart key

attached is the 2007 Prius Brochure

If it has the original rims, you could tell by that if it is a touring model or not

I owned an 07 Touring. They are a Prius III with SKS, Bluetooth hand free phone, JBL 9 Speaker Audio with 6 Disc In-Dash CD Changer, 16" Tires/Rims, slightly longer rear fin, slightly stiffer suspension (like euro-models), HID Headlights and Fog Lights. That is the difference in 07 between Touring and standard model III.

It does have original rims and dealer confirmed that this is touring but they say it is an option. Indeed there is no black button on the door some here mentioned.

can you post a picture of the rims?

if you look at the above attachment - the brochure for the 2007 Prius, they all came with SKS.

I know that there were 'Fleet' Pruis, that did not come with the SKS, but as far as I know, you could not buy one.

The touring model came with a different set of rims and I think the wheels were bigger.

also, is the Toyota logo in silver on your fob?

I was told if it has the silver logo, then it is for a car with SKS.

Maybe this explains the puzzle. Carfax says the first owner was fleet. I am not sure if this means NYC taxi or something line that, or it was an lessee (never done a lease so not sure the owner is the driver or company giving lease.

The fob I have is without silver logo but I do not think it is original. Guess the car does not have it.

2007 package #1 is base no SKS. Key must go in slot under steering wheel to start. Logo on FOB is black.

Package #2 like my car has SKS. Goes into READY with key in pocket. Logo on FOB is chrome. The SKS is the best feature. Hate not to have SKS. Deal breaker for me. Package #2 also has the 3.5 aux input.
