Is this what it takes for a thread to get hot?

I've noticed a pattern on threads.

If it's good news or non-controversial, not much attention....maybe Star Trek, Apple, or pets will generate attention.

But, if the thread touches politics, religion, or race, the thread takes off to an inevitable meltdown. Same usual suspects escalate the thread to a fever pitch, and HAVE to know that thread is bound to get deleted, moved, or locked. Still, voices in their head scream to forget common sense and kill the thread....if three linebacker-sized bouncers were at their computer, they still could not rip their fingers from the keyboard. Again - same players who definitely are not going to change their POV that can't stop.

I don't know about deleted but Freds House of Politics is the place a lot of these threads end up in . . . and deserved.

You are right that a few of us have strong opinions but that is no reason why one side or the other should EVER get free pass.

This is PriusChat and as long as we're discussing things Prius and automotive, I'm a happy camper. In fact, I'll put my Prius content posting against any of the 'honorable competition' anyday. But I won't unilaterally give our 'honorable competition' a free pass to echo nonsense from the bubble.

Come on down to "Freds House of Politics" where you'll find plenty of race, politics, and religion to your heart's content. Just don't expect any form of 'enlightenment.'

"Interesting?" more like Kabuki mud wrestling but fun enough. At least Fred's House of Politics keeps the nonsense where it won't 'scare the horses.' Well I've got some Prius stuff to do today and other projects.

Since I don't have (or requested) access to Fred's House of Politics, I don't know when threads are moved there.

Stated differently, occasionally a member seems deluded that they can border/go into an outright personal attack and it's going to stand for more than a few hours...this has been stopped often enough that it can be called insanity.

Some of the horses I know stay away in disgust, not fear. ;)

Rational, intelligent discussion is difficult enough to find on the regular channels.

    True

Anyone that wants to join Fred's House of Politics or similar go for it.

It's the members that attempt to hold those discussions outside of that forum I question their sanity. And on several occasions, the PC staff has moved/closed threads when I report them. They have this fantasy the tone of the thread screams it goes to Fred's House of Politics/or gets personal and that thread will stand indefinitely. Long enough that someone they are flaming will change a life-long conviction in a very humiliating way. Or when the same kind of thread was closed for the 1000th time, it will succeed the 1001th time.

I suspect some of these people have also had phone calls ended on them and tables at restaurants cleared because they lack the good sense to agree to disagree. This is true of the only PC member I've put on ignore because he utterly can't reason for his emoting, which may be therapeutic for him, but definitely not for the rest of us.

Pattern goes something like this. Thread is created, bob or one of his lackies goes in making irrelevant political and/or racist posts, meltdown ensues, thread gets moved.

There seem to be some differing viewpoints here as to the identity of these 'usual suspects'. ;)

One of my sociology projects I am in the process of completing has been on web forums. Typically they are a microcosm of people who, despite notions of creating a "broad minded" gathering on the Internet have done just the opposite. A forum devoted solely to one topic, such as a toyota Prius for example, is actually not the best place for an "outsider" to go for information on said topic because they will only get one narrow minded viewpoint on the topic. In other words there is no difference of opinion, it's as if the forum as a whole is one individual.

That being said, there always exists a small faction of people who are what I labeled the "peacekeepers". These people, although they may have "good intentions" in keeping the forum "on topic" are actually limiting its potential by alienating others who do not share their often narrow minded viewpoints. These people who like to flaunt their above average expertise on one topic do so to compensate for something they are lacking outside of the microcosm of the forum. It is similar to mmorpg's. People use their high status in the online world to compensate for what they lack in the real world.

To those whom I may have offended I apologize; but I thank you for being unwilling participants in my ant farm. :)

For those that know...this is funny!

It seems that it only takes a couple of specific people to comment on a subject (with bad juju) and the thread moves to the political threads, where they continue to spew forth! I watched (and wrote) on one specific thread for several years, and several hundred posts until a purple of these trolls chimed in, and BINGO, off to the nether world.

These people couldn't carry on a civil discourse if thier life depended on it...and they know who they are! In fact one has "proudly" stated that his mission is to be disruptive. Why the mods
allow such behaviour is beyond me, but hey, I'm not in charge. My feeling is if you cause a thread to get booted more than once or twice that person should be booted for life!

    Just MHO,

    LOL!

Yeah, it is unfortunate that Star Trek threads or most of the threads in Other Cars get little love. :(

Yeah, I have no access to FHoPol, nor do I want access to it. If I read posts there, I'd probably just eventually get angry/upset. No thanks.

The only thing of worth in the politics section is TJ's cartoon thread. Seems more one sided lately, but I can appreciate clever humor even when directed at me.

Think you were referring to the Gay Marriage thread.

Anyway, I agree with you that serial flamers/thread closers get warned by the staff they are at risk of getting banned.

Going back a while, but Mystery Squid and Dr Berman are two people lacking people skills that seemed intent on simply raising hell.

Lately, I've read famous quotes on never ever budging on your convictions vs. compromising....I think Lincoln (still need to see the movie) was pretty good at knowing how far to go before it was a battle he could not win. As the Civil War started, he sometimes used the velvet glove on border states, sometimes was forceful, depending on the situation.

On a couple of topics, flamers simply did not tolerate gathering out all the facts before we attempted to draw conclusions. Specifically - Michael Vick and Paula Deen. During those threads, I was open to hearing:

    • If they continuing their objectionable behavior
    • If multiple people of varied backgrounds say that person is a sorry character
    • If someone has an axe to grind and making up stuff against that person. Turns out someone has been arrested for extortion against PD by the FBI.
It was impossible to do that when a member was screaming I just 100% agree at face value...what they seem incredibly clueless about is when I ask for links and they respond in anger...this is an opportunity to give themselves great credibility and instead makes their opinion very questionable. These kind of people behave like there is only one topic in the world that matters and they can post links (if any) in a minute or two. The rest of us have a more balance life, working for a living and don't have hours to Google on it.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions of the redeeming value of that forum. :)

Sorry if I have offended you, but I have never "proudly" announced anything.

Your role here exists in almost all webforums regardless of topic. In my research I have labeled this role the "crybaby". The crybaby typically doesn't contribute anything of value to the discussions he/she posts in; only to raise alarms when the viewpoints of a minority of members do not match that of the majority. Typically the crybaby latches on to one or two posts of the minority members they seek to ostracize and brings them up whenever they can. Typically the "crybaby" and the "peacekeeper" travel together.

Most of the viewers on this thread are straight males and found the above picture amusing and even got a slight arousal. A few more might have filed it on their hard drive and do naughty things.

I suspect a few are more obsessed with the Fred's House of Politics topics than sexual addiction and mastubrate while posting away - I'm at least half serious. They are more drawn to it than sex!

    Indeed.

I suspect I am a usual suspect in this case. The thing is, there is nothing that annoys me more than bigotry. It's bigotry (and its kissing cousin stupidity) that lead to inequality, poverty and war. Pretty much everything that's wrong with the world can be traced to the sort of attitudes that I see on here and argue against. I can't help it

Am I alone in not believing this?
