Someone over at the Prius 2G group ( http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Prius-2G/message/48989 ) wrote a program that converts your phone list from Outlook (not Outlook Express) into a format that can be uploaded to the Prius (via computer and Bluetooth I presume?). Sounds very cool and it's freeware. I don't use Outlook and my phone will upload, but for those of you with Verizon, a phone that won't transfer, or if you have a large number of phone numbers and your phone will only do one at a time this might be a good option for you.

Oh, I so want this to work...dang it, but it does not...I followed the instructions, and it finds the phone, but it won't accept the passcode. I tried changing it to something else on the PRIUS, then the computer, but no luck. Then I changed it back on the PRIUS, and the computer, but alas, and even allack, no luck again.

    Dang it.

Hey, we won't tolerate harsh language like allack around here pally....
But, go back to the thread I linked to, there's something about a VCF file you need that apparently the link in the Help file was broken, maybe that will help you figure it out.

Wow this is exactly what I was looking for on this website. Thanks to everyone for helping resolve this problem. I will give it a try as soon as I get a Bluetooth USB adapter for my laptop. I will post if it works or I have any problems.

I downloaded the software but it won't convert my contacts. It keeps complaining that the object does not support a method, regardless of whether I pick "FileAs" or "Full Name" or whatever. Anyone know what might be up?

I'd suggest posting your questions, problems with the author/original poster over on the Prius 2G group linked above.

I'll send him an e-mail inviting him to this thread, but certainly can't promise he's going to respond here.

FWIW, others seem to have had success with the "ripper".

Thanks for the invite! I wrote Auto Ripper, and as any new program, it takes a while to work some kinks out. I only can initially check programs for the systems I have access to, after that its up to the user community to provide feedback.

So, can you tell me the OS you are using and what version Outlook it reports in the Help about box?

What exactly does the error box say?

    Thanks

PS: My original purpose was to have something I didn't have to do very many steps to create a phone book. The origial program imported exported contacts from Outlook. I am thinking of putting this feature back in since it would allow Outlook Express users, and some others that are having problems, with building a phone book. Is there any interest?

    Hello,

I am running XP with all updates and Microsoft Outlook 2002, there was Groupwise installed before, but I uninstalled it.

You can also export your Outlook data to a text file and then edit it to conform to the format below. The ripper application makes adjustments for the older units while the format I show below supports the 2006 models with dual number slots and without the +1 country code problem. You just save the text file out as {filname}.vcf and transfer it to the car as a file--the car will know how to handle it.

    Code:
    BEGIN:VCARD
    VERSION:2.1
    N:Jim Shorts
    TEL;WORK;VOICE:16505551234
    END:VCARD

    BEGIN:VCARD
    VERSION:2.1
    N:Duane Pipe
    TEL;WORK;VOICE:16505559378
    TEL;CELL;VOICE:16505555728
    END:VCARD

    BEGIN:VCARD
    VERSION:2.1
    N:Paige Turner
    TEL;WORK;VOICE:16505559182
    END:VCARD

Does the error happen when you hit the Rip Phone Book button? If so, try unchecking all the phones but Mobile and try it.

I ran into this error message as well. However, in my frustration I clicked on the Prius phonebook mockup scroll arrows and the phone numbers suddenly displayed. After that the message has not reappeared. The message referred to an unused or nonexistant method??? Since it quit happening I am unable to quote it exactly. Other than that problem, after tweaking the phonebook for a while I was able to upload it to the Prius without problems. Very inspired idea to mockup the Prius screen to preview the list. BTW, I was reloading my wifes phonebook due to the MFD failure.

A note here for Outlook Express users--if you also have Outlook you can import the Outlook Express contacts list into Outlook and then use Auto Phone Ripper.

Mertus, if you're ever bored and want a challenge, modify the program so you can edit the names and numbers directly in the Prius screen.

    Great little program. Thanks

The error message is specifically "Method 'FileAs' not supported by automation object."

It occurs regardless of which Name field I choose. I have Outlook 2003 SP1, (11.6359.6360)

Ok nevermind I tried the up trick and it worked.

EDIT: No it didn't. Only some of the names show up and I can't save the file.

I am using SP2, don't have any SP1. I'll look more about what Microsoft says should exist as name objects. Right now I don't know how to ask Outlook for what object exist.

There is a snow storm headed my way, so I expect it will crimp my extensive social life (you know, Brittney jetting in, duck hunting with Dick and Antonin, working on a new song with Paul, discussing with George the latest NSA intercepts on my vegan neighbors) and I'll have time to look at this

Thanks for the support. I really want this application to work but unfortunately I don't know Pascal, nor have a compiler so I can't look into it myself.

I put a new version up. Only one minor change in outlook access, but you can import csv files exported by outlook.

I am having some of the same issues... The first run seemed to go great, until it appeared to hang on one of my sub-folders (a folder that had a alias of many emails in it). I was able to navigate through contacts on the screen for the first two folders but alas I finally killed the program since it didn't seem like it was ever going to get through that last folder. (I did wait about 30 minutes and there are less than 20 contacts in there).

Now when I start the program, all of the phone options are grayed out and it won't let me choose anything in the pull down menu where before I was able to select 'Full Name' or 'File As'.

I am looking at exporting each folder into a file and manually converting these to the VCF format as described above, but this seems very painful. I'd love to see this program work, but might have to write some sort of Perl script to manually convert my data. :(

The new release has been out for a while now, has anyone else had success or failures or figured a way around my issues? I found the ini file for the ripper program and deleted that and it still won't work. Deleted it rebooted and re-installed and it still seems to remember where I was before.

I've been using Auto Phone Ripper ever since I got my Prius, and it works great. I upload my contacts file directly from my phone (Motorola mpx220) after running the program and storing the file on my phone's memory card.
One hint- as I have far more contacts in Outlook than I need to have in the car's phone book (don't want to have to scroll through them all), I assign a particular category ("Phonebook1") to all the contacts that I want to upload to the Prius' phonebook, and filter them when I run Auto Phone Ripper.
