Can a hitch be installed and to what capacity can it tow if possible? Is there a suggested weight that it can tow?

Toyota does not recommend any towing so don't pull a 20 ft boat.

How about 2 bikes. Or a kayak on a kayak trailer?

I've looked into getting the hitch for an upcoming road trip. They say it's an easy install. I want to know is there any contact with the body, I don't want any rubbing. They could not say as they have not installed on a Prius c yet.

this time around i just took it to a place and they installed for $50...i installed a similar hitch on my 2nd gen prius back in 2005...it was tedious to say the least and i am sure this install would've been the same...i just did not feel like dealing with it...

I was thinking of going to Uhaul because the whole hitch and installation is only around $150-$200, any thoughts on this being a bad idea?

I just ordered the CURT Manufacturing 11299 Class 1 Trailer Hitch, Pin and Clip off of amazon. Looks easy to install.

Damn! That was a hard install!
I had help from a friend and it still took us over an hour!
But hopefully it is worth it..

I just installed the curt hitch. It took me an hour start to finish. Good quality product. Good welds, nice paint, and good instructions.
I bought it through amazon and it arrived within
    3 days.

    I recommend the hitch.

What was the hard part? I did have to swap one factory bolt with one in the kit. That was pretty much the hard part for me.

It's hard when you have to remove the bumper support, support it with one hand, and try to properly thread the new screws in place. That sucker was heavy! I thought it was easy based off of the product photo but everything was a tight fit. Still worth it.

Oh. I removed only the plastic air dam under there and bolted mine right on. I think it had 4 bolts. I used 3 original Toyota bolts and one from the kit, it was longer. I think I had a thread on installing mine about 5 months ago.
Glad you got it on. Its nice to know it is there if needed.

So far ive only used mine 2x but loved it. Just use mine with a cargo bag or putting a double stroller on it for our road trips.

Owners manual says Prius C will not tow anything. For those of us who outfitted Honda Fits with bicycle trailers in spite of their warning we would recommend a trailer including payload not exceedding 500 lb but that also REQUIRES the use of airlift shocks to prevent rear sag and difficult steering. Memory says Monroe MA890 but look up prior posts here to be sure. They are about $66 a pair and are direct fit.
Requiring airlift rear shocks is not a typo; you must install them unless you want a tail happy trailer and very nervous driving. dangerous as well. Somebody out there probably makes a hitch for the Prius C just like Honda Fits. Check ebay, it oesn't look very difficult to make.

I have a trailer hitch and light kit installed on my Prius C. I have a 125 lb sport trailer which was previously towed behind a motorcycle. Loaded with about another 75lb worth or luggage and about another 200lb in the back the cars suspension is not taxed and car handles normally without even any indication that it is towing anything behind it. Fuel economy is only slightly impacted by the trailer. In fact as long as you are not exceeding the max capacity of the car a small trailer, such as the one I am using, will have less impact on the suspension than loading all the weight in the rear of the car; the leaf springs on the trailer are taking the majority of the weight and not the suspension of the car.

Instead of purchasing and installing a hitch, we went with the Sea Sucker Bike Rack [Talon] option. It works well and stays attached for many driving hours, especially in cooler weather [November] in Michigan.

The only downfall is, you have to remove the bikes front tire to install it to the bike rack.. However, they do have other options to chose from.
