The lighter the car the higher the mpg's. Smart thinking :)

The only way to know your true MPG, is to divide miles traveled, by gallons burned. . . .over several tanks. One-click. Two-clicks. Overfilling or not. None of this nets you better or worse MPGs. Over 2-1/2 years, and 34,000 miles, we have averaged 51.047.

If you do fill completely (as I do and have always done), you have to be careful to avoid fuel expansion problems. If you live in a hot climate where the air temperature is much higher than the temperature under the ground where the fuel is stored, the gasoline will expand quite a bit. If you completely fill the tank then park the car for a few hours the fuel can expand enough to put pressure on the fuel system. This can cause damage. Fuel in the evap. canister can't. Think about it. The evap. canister -always- has some liquid fuel in it. That's what it does. It captures the fuel vapour and lets it condense, resulting in liquid fuel in the canister. The failures noted in posts above were probably more related to poor manufacturing than tank filling.

I fill the tank on Pearl S until I see liquid fuel just above the anti-siphon valve. Then I drive. I almost never fuel up after a drive, but rather before. In winter if weather causes me to fill up after a drive I do so without worry, as the air temperature is much lower than the ground temperature.
With Pearl S, this gives me about 100 km of extra range, if I ever need it. First pip goes out around 200 km after fillup.

BTW, I have -NEVER- had the MIL light come on and have been soaking the canister this way for 30 years or as long as my vehicles have had them (whichever is greater). ;)

I always stop pumping after the first click. My friend used to top off his Toyota and then one day he got the warning lights on the dash. His emission system didn't like the extra gas. So, about $1,000 later he now shuts off the pump at the first click.
    Be careful.

Once the second click happens, I put in a little more to round off the dollar amount. These days, that isn't very much money or gas.

i always fill up half tank (because less weight) and SUPER early in the morning or late at night (colder temps like david... said)

this goes for all my vehicles (2 motorcycles and 2 cars)
