Go with Mobil 1 5W30 and the Toyota Filter. You won't go wrong that way. You should see a jump in MPG also. I also agree you made a good choice and congrats!

My brother had the Fit. When we had 4 or more people in the car, the Prius definitely handled the extra load better than the Fit. However, both cars are pretty slow regardless. But, I think that's the wrong point to come across. You should get the car that going to serve your purpose better.

Folks here say you want to change out the transmission (transaxle) fluid now if it has not been atready. Seems it craps up before the 90000 mile recommened change period.

PS- sounds like a good buy

No way in hell I would buy a Fit. If you want the Fit, get the Prius C. Better in every way. If you want a normal Prius hatchback, get the Prius hatchback. The Fit has been obsoleted by better hardware from Toyota.

I'm picking her up today, the owner and I talked about pricing - he had it as a touring model on autotrader when in fact (thanks to PC!) it was a standard Prius pkg 5, went from $13,750 to $13,250 with 48k miles.

I will look into changing the transaxle fluid. I'm just looking for an independent mechanic with hybrid experience in my area...they are hard to locate. Say I go through Toyota to do this - how much would they charge?

Tejas Toyota changed our transaxle fluid and charged $120 as I recall. The job should be one hour labor and 4 quarts of the fluid. It is a simple drain and refill. Had ours changed at 60K and has been fine since then. 71K on the clock now.

Comparison questions on a car specific forum, probably don't lend much perspective. My guess is that the overwhelming response on a Fit forum, to this question, would be to point out all the reason why a Fit is the better option.

That said, just remember; If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.

I just came from a Honda Fit to The Prius.

And honestly? Both are excellent vehicles. I'm glad I can say I've now owned both...at different times.

IMO, The Fit...is as advertised. It's fun to drive. It's quick and agile and even though it's no powerful sports car, it rides like almost a go-kart...

The Fit for a subcompact, also has one of the best designed and versatile interiors. I loved the layout of almost everything. The magic seats and perfectly flat and low load floor made it amazingly versatile for utility. You can configure it to hold or transport things almost like owning a small truck.

But in any comparison from Fit to Prius the primary question, because it is the primary difference is "How much do you value owning a Hybrid?".

I loved my Fit and it pretty much returned the advertised gas mileage. But it is a standard ICE vehicle. I had a Automatic "Sport" Fit...and it returned the EPA estimate 28/30/32....under ideal conditions.

( By the way if I were to buy a Fit again? I think I'd want a manual transmission...I think it would be even more fun to drive with a manual. )

But at anywhere from 26-32 mpg? Well with my Prius, I'm disappointed if I finish a trip and only read a 32 mpg average.

I would also say, IMO The Prius is ( for me ) a much more comfortable vehicle. It's bigger, and much better for longer drives or road trips. The Fit was fun to drive, but a long road trip in it did become tiring.

I'm a fan of both these vehicles. Personally?

If I was going with "Future Family" and comfort and ultimate efficiency and WANTING TO OWN a hybrid...I'd pick Prius.

If you want a versatile, fun to drive vehicle...easy to park and cheap to maintain? Honda Fit.

But when the bullet hits the bone, whenever anyone asks whether they should buy a Prius vs. (Any Other Standard Vehicle) I think the primary question that must be asked and answered is how much do you value owning a Hybrid?

If the gas mileage and efficiency are things you value enough...then get the Hybrid. If the difference between 30 mpg, and 50 mpg, isn't enough?- Well only you can answer that.

Great to see opinions from owners of both a Fit and Prius, very informative! PriusChat is an invaluable resource, especially for newbies or those considering a Prius purchase.

For years I have wanted either a Prius or a Fit Sport (2009-newer). I always go the budget route when it comes to buying a newer (used) car, I pay cash and set my budget max at $10K, but try to pay less. Obviously, my price range limits me to older, higher-mileage vehicles or salvage/rebuilt (no way). I've seen a few 09 Fit Sports close to $10K, but it will be another year or 2 before more are available in my price range, and by then they'll have more miles.

I'm happy to say I'm now the proud owner of a 2007 Prius . It's a 1-owner that's high on miles (161K), but the price was too good to pass up, and I didn't see any red flags, so I jumped on it. Certainly a gamble with that many miles, but the original owner appeared to have driven it fairly gently (traveling sales) and maintained it decently. I've followed the forums here and am hopeful there's good life left, with proper maintenance.

I'm really a small wagon/hatchback kind of guy, and the newer (2009+) Fits are really appealing to me, they look like they'd be fun to drive and have that roomy interior. But the Prius seemed more like a new adventure in driving, and appeals to the techno-nerd side of me. The more I drive it, the more I appreciate what an engineering marvel it is. It's been fun learning how to maximize fuel economy in driving habits - I'm getting 50+mpg in city traffic and love it!

I'm sure I would be happy with a Fit, but at this point in my life, I wanted to own a Prius, or you could even say, "experience" a Prius. It's been fun so far and despite the age and miles, I'm impressed!

Honda Fit's AT is not nearly as durable as Prius's CVT. I worked for a major auto auction for almost two years & had first hand exposure to reliability issues of all makes & models.

Honda Fit is a good little city car, but if longevity & durability are near top of your priorities Prius is a no brainer. In California, Gas-Electric Hybrids are exempt from smog checks too. Just pay your registration annually & never have to deal with smog stations.

I own a 2009 fit manual and a 2010 Prius 4, and I honestly cannot answer your question.
The fit is faster (manual shift)
    The Prius is bigger (longer)
    Buy both!!!
P.S. the fit can spin the tires in first and second gear.
P.P.S. the Prius impresses in laws and makes you appear to be a respectable person.

The fit should cost less for comparable age and mileage. New fit is almost $10k less than the Prius.
