Those "orange tubes" are 500 volt cables from the inverter to run the variable speed electric motor in the compressor.
Anything orange in the Prius is high voltage.

they repaired the front end of the car and re-fitted alot of parts, so i'm pretty confident that the oil has not been replaced...

    how could i check this?

John, I have a bad feeling about the whole of this aircon system

The fact that the electrics are screwed says a lot

Maybe when they put it all back together, they used standard aircon pag oil and then ran it, and then maybe it damaged the whole circuit and took the other parts with it?

Can I pump dye into the system so I can spot any leaks visually?

Leaks may be the least of my problems though if they have incorrectly re-installed the aircon system

The PAG oil only damages the electric motor and throws a code for that disabling the car so that is unlikely. The most likely thing is either they filled it and it has a leak or they did not pay to have it filled. An evacuation would quickly find if there was a leak. I will post more of my thoughts on this and the history of the sale of the car later. as I have a very busy day today. I will log in this evening with my thoughts.

    Thank you John :)

Okay - on the evacuation side of things - I can see that the vacuum pump and measuring meters can be purchased from the US, all under £80 - which isn't the end of the world, and atleast that way, I would be able to re-charge my AC system in the future aswell

    Speak later

    cheers

Sam do some checks on the availability of the oil and it's price before buying gauges ect.

okay - just going to have a look on ebay...

one more thing - in order to detect leaks - is it worth buying some AC dye aswell - so any leaks show up more easily?

just to add - the part number for this is:

    08885-09129

and they recommend putting 0.2 litres into the AC system

Just got off the phone to Interdynamics Inc and they sell 7 oz. pourable bottles, each for $7.74

7 oz is approximately 0.2 Litres, which matches up to Toyota's recommended amount.

Interdynamics themselves have a minimum order value of $300 but it's still good to know that there is somebody out there selling this oil at a much cheaper rate
