Selfish Leaf Driver versus Bad Circuit Breaker vs Power surge

Discussion in 'Gen 1 Prius Plug-in 2012-2015' started by JurassicPrius, Jul 21, 2013.

  1. There is a Park and Ride lot that I pass by on the way to work. Every day I notice a Black Leaf parked at a charging station within this lot. Today, Saturday, I thought I would drive to that lot, and plug in to one of the chargers, while I would jog along a nearby jogging trail at an adjacent park. There are two chargers located at that Park and Ride lot, one had a Tesla parked and charging. This one had a cone in front of the space. On the charger itself, there was a paper sign that said out of order. The charger also did not have the "Power" light on. I looked on the side of the charger, and there was a power switch in the off position. I turned the power switch on, and the charger powered up. I was able to charge without any problems. I don't want to suggest that a Nissan Leaf driver would mark this charger out of order, when he was not using it, so he could always have this charger available. On second thought it may be that the switch is a circuit breaker, and when a plug in Prius is using the charger, there is no problem. But if a Leaf uses this charger, it draws more current, and the breaker goes off. Or there may have been a power surge of some sort that threw the breaker, but now there is no problem.

The title is misleading. Flames without the facts.

There is another thread about an angry Leaf owner. It is starting to look like EV's are friendly for the environment but not friendly among people

Unless it's been changed, title seems fine to me, saying there are three possibilities. Having seen someone charging for a week, then found the cone and hand written note, and then that it could charge, there is at least grounds for suspicion. I don't think I signed up until I actually had something to say, so I'm not so surprised about his stats. And it actually seems to be non PiP Prius drivers who are getting at us the most here!

JurassicPrius, maybe you need to check it again a couple of times and see if the cone and note is always there when the other car isn't. Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, third time is enemy action... If it does recur, seems reasonable enough to me to a) mention the location here and b) check with the charging company whether the point has been out of order.

Makes sense to wonder if all is on the up-and-up, but if interested in pursuing this, good to have more facts, research this and ask questions diplomatically without pointing fingers. Seems like this would be high risk to get caught if someone was doing this as a personal parking space. Also, you mentioned you saw the note/cone on Saturday and most people work M-F, so could very well be unrelated to nefarious motives.

I would guess Park & Rides may well have cameras?
If the city put the charger in for the citizens, they may be open to scanning to see who put the note up.
While it peaks the curiosity, it is a loose coincidence at this point. I would second the suggestion to get at least a second data point.

Today I was at the Encino Park and Ride at 5174 Hayvenhurst Avenue. There are two EVSE's at this lot. One of them does have a circuit breaker that seems to trip very easily. It tripped two minutes after I plugged it in, and five minutes thereafter. I gave up after that. While I was pulling away another EV came by. I turned around, and he was not able to get the thing to work at all. I guess because Prius's draw less electricity the circuit breaker is more forgiving...but the circuit breaker is on its last legs.

It would be easy to test. Flip the breaker and put the sign and cone back. Check on your way to work tomorow. If the Leaf is in the spot then you know.

This makes me wonder - has it ever happened to anyone that they plug the EVSE into an outside outlet at, say, at strip mall and it trips a major circuit breaker that shuts down something major that was also sharing that same breaker?

I have only charged about 6 times at my brothers apartment bldg. Outside plug-in made for winter time, tank heaters to warm cars for starting, never had a problem!

I've shut down a Chili's restaurant by using their new L2 ChargePoint charging station, does that count? ;)

Only 1 or 2 chargers in a big lot is pathetic! No wonder people play the cone game!
How about 10 chargers, that are properly constructed, with sufficient size breakers so they won't trip at the first power jiggle!
    That would be nice!

Did they thank you for discovering an improper charging station installation?

No, I was more concerned about them having a negative attitude towards EVs because of this issue, but in the end, they were very nice about it, and all of us learned some interesting lessons.

I actually did a little write-up about this, because I really want EV drivers to help out businesses running into these type of growing pains.
