Gliding in the classic?

    Hi recently bought a 2002 classic and have to say I Love this thing. She has 213k miles on her and runs great so far. I've read up all the newb threads and driving tips so my question is this. Is it my car or are gen 1s generally harder to glide than let's say a gen2?i can get all the arrows to stop moving once I start but only for about a few seconds until either the engine turns back on or the traction battery starts powering the wheels kinda frustrating. I've driven plenty of gen 2 s at work since I repair the daily and this technique is def easier on the newer models.i work on priuses but never actually owned one until now so was just curious,thanks ahead.

    I don't know as I use a different protocol:
    • Set cruise control for <target-speed> mph and monitor energy display
    • When wheels alone are charging battery, shift into "N"
    • When speed reaches cruise control set speed: shift into "D", and then cruise control "resume"

    Yes, the Gen 1 is very difficult to glide in but it is not impossible. The guy above me is the man to listen to though because he has attained 700+ miles on one tank.

    But with that said, if you still wanna try it, here's how I do it. First, you need to make sure you're in S4 (if the ICE is engaging, you're not in S4 unless your battery is almost depleted). If you're not familiar with that, read up on stages of operation. Once in S4, Accellerate to about 2-3 mph over gliding speed, ease off the accelerator and slightly reapply, look at the energy display and move your foot slowly up or down depending on the indication (if regen, push down, if batt drive, ease off), you will have to really concentrate and it will def take practice but, it can be done.

    Hi there, the effort required I have found after many years of ownership can be quite dangerous with this generation of Prius, and simply not worth it because it will fight you all the way. As you go slower and slower, you have to keep your eyes off the road for too long because she will want to keep going into EV mode. As you have stated, Gen 2's are far easier. I nearly rear ended a car that was braking for a crosswalk once because a child just ran across without hitting the button, and that was the very last time I ever tried. My wife's scream haunted me for awhile. The few pennies saved in fuel is simply not worth the cost of damage, someone's else's car, their life or at worst case your life. These are wonderful cars, and I love mine, but sometimes you have to weigh the pro's and con's.

    Sorry to be so morbid, but I care about safety.

    Hey, this was a first gen car, they could not think of everything right! : )

    Yeah that's exactly what I found,I use mr Wilson's method above and it basically achieves the same purpose.like you said it a first gen so it's not perfect but I love this little car!

    Good luck with your Prius! I just bought a 2002 with 174k miles on it. On the 200 mile trip back I got 56 mpg with the a/c on and the cruise set on 59 ish. I am getting better mileage in the 02 than I did on my 08.

    Lucky you!i just completed a 240 mile trip and I got 45 mpg even with the cruise. I'm not complaining though perfectly content with that!i was also do 70 so that isn't too shabby

    I usually get mid 40's when my wife is in the car and I HAVE to go the speed limit of 70. This car feels more solid then my 08. It reminds me of a 1980's Mercedes 190, in having that tank-like feel for such a small car. But....these skinny tires.....
