Road trips

I had my 2006 Prius for 120,000 miles. Never had a problem on long trips. What sort of problem were you worried about exactly? FYI, gas mileage really drops going up steep grades, but you recover MPG on way down.

 

I've used mine for long trips from UK to Germany and it's great and returns excellent mpg

 

We did a road trip; Northern Maine, to DC, to Kansas City, back to DC, and Maine. With four adults [smallest is 150# the largest is 280#] and a week worth of luggage.

We had no problems, and we got great gas mileage.

It was comfortable, roomy, and handled great.

The biggest "problem" on long trips is how little you'll spend on fuel. Other, more practical things to remember:

- Folks tend to carry extra stuff in the rear seat on trips, remember to keep the battery vent clear on the right side of the rear seat.

- Couples often take two sets of keys (fobs in the case of the Prius) in case of loss / locking them in the car. Both fobs have to be out of the car to be able to lock the door.

- A soft cooler with a flip-open top fits nicely on the floor behind one of the front seats.

- The size and location of the MPH display makes it very easy for the passenger to see - and comment upon.

- There's no really good place for a garbage bag in the front seat area.

- The trunk area under the rear floor is great for stashing shoes and your dirty laundry on the return trip.

Something like "I know you are going slow to save gas but I really need to get to the next gas station very soon even if you don't need gas."

 

Honestly, the biggest problem I've noticed is that I have to force myself to stop and get snacks/drinks because I'm not stopping all of the time to fill gas...

 

Have used mine for several long trips over 3+ years of ownership. As always, check your tire pressure before leaving and oil level. At speeds over 70 mph, you will drop down to about 47 to 48 mpg depending on the road grade. Also, you will really notice "tire roar" in the cabin depending on how rough the road is.

 

I have made a 5700 mile trip and a 7500 trip, both 3 week trips , both in my old 2005 Prius. Trips were great!
Did nothing special to car just enjoyed the trips!
Average on trips 46.5MPG highway speeds 70-75 MPH, Fall time of year.
You will average more like 50-52 in a 2013, or better I think! Have fun!

 

I'm going to descent from the chorus here and say range for the Prius was a bit disappointing for me. I'm used to 500 mile ranges in my previous road trip vehicles. My Prius was near fumes at 400 miles. Fuel economy dropped precipitously from 60 to 47 mpg. This is all due to the higher speeds I was going.

The front seats are not too comfortable for long trips. Not uncomfortable either but could be a lot better.

Do not put key in wife's purse and drop her off at the entrance while you park the car. You will forget she has the key.

 

I just did 700 miles r/t Chicago to Michigan and back feels grat in the road A/C running pulled 53mpg

 

Just returned from a 2260 mile trip to Miami and back, averaged 48.1 calculated w/cruise set on 68 mph both ways. Not as quiet, but just as comfortable as my Lexus LS and the $30 fillups wasn't painful at all.

 

Both fobs do not have to be outside the car to lock the doors. You can't lock the doors by touching the door, but you can lock them with the outside fob. 2012 prius 3.

I'm the one commenting when my fiancee is driving 85 MPH "You really want to test the Prius defense theory that no judge would believe you can get a Prius to go 85?"

 

Took the Prius to Utah, not bad.... had to get use to the seats in terms of a little lack of thigh support for long journeys but nothing a little stretch at a rest stop didnt fix. Will be taking the C on its first road trip next week.. We'll see how that one does.... (hoping to get an armrest & cc before then lol)
