If PiP truly could get better mpg, I'm wondering if the lithium battery is more efficient than the NiMH

    It's lighter for one thing.

The lithium battery is better all the way around... efficiency, discharging, and recharging. It is lighter with respect to density, but it is quite a bit larger (therefore heavier) than the NiMH pack in the regular Prius. You can actually see its ability to capture more energy from braking on the display, if you are lucky enough to be able to do a side-by-side comparison.

It's only lighter in terms of energy density. The overall weight of the PiP battery is about 100 lbs heavier.
