I tried looking for this information these forums and contacted Toyota support regarding this issue, but I'm about to go insane because I can't find any solutions.

I drive a 2012 Prius Two without the GPS or e-tunes. I also use a Samsung Galaxy S3 on Jellybean.

So far I've been able to get the music information to display on the navigation unit (artist, album, song) but it just shows a little box where the album art will be (bluetooth or usb logo). The information also only displays if I use the "Play Music" app on my phone, other apps (Doubletwist, Fusion, Winamp) will play the song, but won't show the info. I most of all just want the album art to display though.

I borrowed a friend's iPhone 3GS and tested it with Bluetooth and USB. Bluetooth would play the song but would not show any album art, or song information.

Interestingly enough, connecting it through USB allowed my car to recognize it as an iPod and had multiple options for me (Playlists, Artists, Albums) and even showed the song information and album art.

tl;dr -- I got album art to show up using an iPhone 3GS USB. 3GS Bluetooth, and Galaxy S3 Bluetooth/USB have been unsuccessful so far.

Bonus question: Is it possible to install a nicer navigation unit? Recommendations? Thanks

It's not the car. It depends on the device used. My iPad 1 shows the genre in the picture, however, certain songs that don't fit into a genre show the album art. If anyone knows why, please let us know!

Could it be the metatags that are part of MP3s?

Lots of my MP3s were empty until I used MusicBrainz Picard to populate them. And yes this particular program has batch mode to make it easy to do massive amounts of songs.

.wav cannot hold metatags, only .mp3

All of this is on Android, not sure about the Apple and iTunes...?

There's a menu under setup/general called "capture image" that you can turn on. I assume it's for the album image but when turned on, it doesn't do anything. We just bought a Toyota Avalon hybrid to replace my wife's car. It has the entune head unit and it displays the album. It works with my iPad 4 and iPod 5. I have a Prius 2 with the non-navigation screen.

On my second try I connected my iPod 5 to the USB connection inside the center glove box. Then in the audio screen I selected "source". When you scroll left the last selection is iPod. When you select that and return to the audio screen, after a few seconds, the image will appear. I have a Prius 2 with the non-navigation screen.

Don't you love the various implementations of Bluetooth Advanced Audio Distribution Profiles?

Third party developers are always behind when supporting new features since their app needs to work on a vast majority of devices and they have to wait for general release from Google of the base OS, where Google apps like Play Music have the inside track and can implement new base OS features more quickly. I've read that Android JB 4.1.x and below does not have the full set of Bluetooth metadata features available for stuff like album art like Apple's iOS v6 does. I've heard that JB 4.2.x might include more Bluetooth features, but have not found anything to confirm it. The only way would be to find someone with a nexus phone or tablet that has 4.2.2 loaded and test it with the Prius.

I'm more interested in having more AVRCP bluetooth controls available from Android, especially fast forward since I listen to podcast. I've read that JB 4.2.x is supposed to have AVRCP v1.4 so I can't wait for my Galaxy S3 to get it providing Samsung implements it if it's available in the base 4.2.x android release.

I have a Galaxy Nexus 4.2.2 JDQ39 and it doesn't work either. Plays the music and all but doesn't show any album art or song title or anything, just a big Bluetooth logo. Least you get the sing title/albumr/ artist :(

My brother has a Nexus 4.. Ill see if it works with that one later, but doubt it, heard it was an issue with android Bluetooth versions

Well, the latest Android 4.3 boldly states AVRCP 1.3 was added which just adds metadata to the bluetooth stack. Android still needs to get beyond puberty and grow up and add AVRCP 1.4. The Nexus with all its glory, still isn't worth it to me yet without full AVRCP like iOS and even Blackberry have included for years.

2012 prius 2 here using an iPhone 5. I can get the album art to show up if i'm plugged into the center console USB. Bluetooth shows the song info and the bluetooth logo where the album art should be. Has anyone figured out a fix for this?

Ps. on any prius with Nav or entunes album art works great over BT. Seems like this problem is isolated to the non-nav touchscreen prius two's.

I use iTunes to add album arts for my songs. When I played the songs, they either displays the default album art or a another album art shows up on the screen. I'm guessing the head unit is pulling the images from another metadata. This anomaly doesn't only appears using bluetooth but also when I connect through the USB.

I have to explore this further when I get the chance. I also use TagScanner for mass tag editing. It supports different types of metadata so I might be able to discover where Prius HU picks up the album arts.
