Live in California, SD, just bought my new 2013 Prius a week ago today. had the windows tinted this last weekend on all windows (except for the front of course) 35% all around. well...just got pulled over, one turn away from home just for my tint. it was 7:45pm so tint looks darker. wondering if anyone has been pulled over for this and bypassed it? I absolutely do not want to take them off since I paid so much for them and I will not get my money back from the tint shop. I have been pulled over for my tint before on my old Prius with tint much darker and just took it off. I've been looking around and see that you can just pay the fine and they will look the other way? those forums were dated at later years so I am wondering if that is something that is still current? and how much now?

The cop was a you know what... my license was at my house (40ft away) asked if I could get it and he said " no because you will probably come back out with a shotgun" (how did he know?? Haha just kidding) also thought I had stolen it since I am on the younger side and apparently I shouldn't be able to afford a car at that price range.. Well all I can say is he made SD a safer place by pulling me over. Once he gets off work he'll probably jump in his car all tinted up without a thought in his mind. ( I know plenty of cops that have tint on their personal cars )

Any experience on this situation would be great! Again I do not want to take them off so if the fine will take car of that then ill invest, I'm usually more careful but since the tint is so new I could not roll them down without ruining it.

35% isn't that dark so my guess is you got pulled over for a reason other than the tint. The tint was just a legal excuse.

It's a fix-it ticket. If you don't get it signed, you'll get a notice to go to court and failing that, a failure to appear which will cost you more than replacing the tint.

It's just the two front side windows that you fix. Pay a little now or pay a lot more later. Your choice.

interesting.. as I have said in my original post he pulled me over for my tint. tint alone. I have ran into this situation before (see original post) I am just looking for the option I have seen floating around to see if it is truly legit and current, to hopefully keep my tint on. my choice is to keep my car cool and protect it from anyone that wants to take a peak inside. if paying a fee for them to look the other way is an option, then I will invest in that.

    thanks.

An actual 35% film is too light to protect from anyone who wants to take a peek inside so my guess is yours is actually darker than that.

haha well I don't need to prove anything to you bud. somehow you seem to know what happened and did not happen. I know it is 35% and I did not violate any traffic laws. so unless you have anything useful to say, get off this thread.

CA has specific laws as do all states concerning tint. I'm sure you are aware the combined tint Window + film can not exceed a predetermined amount. There is a meter to check this your shop should perform this test. If you exceed the density I would think the shop would make you sign a release. Total Amount of tint allowed is a law on the books remember it's combined tint. If cop has probabal cause he can pull you over for what he deems 'darker than legal tint' it's your responsibility to know and abide by the law. If you want to test that theory have at it. It's a good life lesson!

I know of people who get pulled over all of the time because of window tint that isn't to dark. The cops should have a tool to test the tint but I would still keep my paperwork on it handy...but as far as not getting pulled over for it, that's probably never going to happen. Window tint fines are lowing hanging fruit for cops.

You're coming here asking for advice on how to cheat out of a window tint ticket.
You had tint over the legal limit and you got caught.

Yes, that ticket is legit, no CA law hasn't changed.

Your bad attitude isn't going to help you either... based on your initial post, I wouldn't be surprised if you got the ticket as opposed to a warning because you had a bad attitude (not to mention you driving without your license, which he could've sited you for as well).

Sometimes you gotta pay to play.

With only 4 whiney post in your history, you have have yet to learn forum manners.
You don't tell anybody to do anything.
If your interaction with the Police was anything like your posts, you earned your ticket!

I see no bad attitude in my original post, or me saying i want to cheat out of a ticket. my attitude comes from people provoking the situation, Im not asking on opinions who you think i am or how things went down. I was just asking for advice on the situation(if you have been through it before), not everyone saying I deserve the ticket based on my bad attitude. if you do not have useful input, then your rants are useless to me.
I did find my info however and if anyone is in California the fine cost $198 and you do not have to take the tint off. of course if you know a cop that can sign it off it only cost $25.(thats shady to me) this was the information I was looking for. thanks for nothing! :) have a nice evening everyone. on to the next one.

Nothing wrong with paying to play, but getting it fixed for $25 and redoing 2 out of 8 windows is most certainly cheaper than $198 (unless you have top-of-the-line ceramic tint).

I was pulled over last week as well for the fronts, 35%. It's a ridiculous law, but whatcha gonna do? I will take it off and get the ticket signed. Then I will purchase lighter tint and put it on myself. The front windows should be easy to do, I hope.

I agree haha. I've tried tinting before and its tough! It's doable though, just very tedious. Let me know how it goes! My tint shop wants to charge me for putting it back on so I may try it myself since its already pre-cut.

Do you still have your receipt for the tint? If it is a legal tint I would think you could take the receipt and prove that it is legal. I have had tint for several years and I haven't been pulled over (yet). I have the darkest tint that is legal.

It is not legal. 35% all around. Have a couple buddies that have darker tint than mine and to this day still have not been caught. Their cars are dark grey, black, etc. I think with my white car the tint looks darker with the high contrast, plus I was pulled over at 7:45 at night so that didn't help.
