It is very difficult to decide just how much enforcement action needs taken when clear violations of the rules have occured (trust me, I know about these things)

It might be helpful for the moderators to know what the "other" users think.

I, for one, say it is time to, at minimum, declare last warning to the handful who have gone overboard. I would also support the immediate expulsion of ANYONE that the moderator feels either went over the line or incited others to go over the line.

The humorous bantering I was expecting when I go to some of these threads has become mean and nasty and, though I am no prude, I encourage my wife and kids to come to this site when a thread is funny and I do NOT want them to be reading the filthy name calling. FHOP or not!!!!

Tell you what, I volunteer for the ban.

    :p

I spend too much time on this forum anyway. I can read Prius related stuff whenever as a guest.

Besides, I know it'll make a bunch of people pretty happy.

"I regret that I have only one life to give to my message board!"

    Later y'all...

For the record: I PM'd Tony last night and again today. Little response until the thread was shut down.

An hour ago I PM'd Danny, and told him I was not going to back down at all in the face of amti-Semitism or personal taunting. Other members started complaining to ME 5 days ago. What I suggested they do, did no good.

I'm appalled at the bad language coming out of me, and I apologize to everyone except Squid for it.

Edit: I voted to ban those inciting it. If I end up being banned, I'll feel that is unfair, as I can prove that each foul-mouthed post of mine was provoked. The evidence is all there.

I voted to ban those who are flaming and using profanity. And I will.
I have received "Post Report" emails every time I have logged in for the last three days. When I was made a Moderator, it was a boring job because everyone was civilized and mature.

Personally, I have sat quietly long enough and let it go far too long. A poll asking for Moderator intervention should not be required.

When I lay my vengeance upon you, you will know I am a Moderator.

Personally, all the various flame-baiting here from the power-drunk conservatives doesn't bother me in the slightest. As odd as it is, they do make up half of this board. And the liberals on this board are probably in some cases the first ones they have ever encountered in a friendly context, so you can't really expect the conservatives to know how to behave. And the conservatives are going to need a place to release their frustrations later this fall as one-by-one their political leaders all start to be voted out of office. :p After all, nobody is forcing anyone to participate in the Flaming House of Pancakes.

And I'm sorry jack. I deliver training classes at work. On the days that I'm teaching, I can't get to the site until at night and sometimes a quick fly-by during lunch and sometimes not for a few days at a time. With all the posts, I can't read them all in the limited time I have. When you first PMed me, I thought I saw a disconnect between what someone said and what someone else quoted. I thought that another Mod had already stepped in so I stepped down. Then when I went back and checked up again after your second email, I was appauled and locked it down. I wanted to give those who were currently reading an opportunity to finish reading it. I'm moving it to a "Moderator" forum. We'll discuss whether the original intent of the thread can be pruned from the nonsense and if so, we'll clean it up and put it back. Most likely, it'll be outright deleted. I, for one, don't even want something like that hanging around in the archives.

I voted to warn those that are flaming. If they continue to act uncivilized then they should be banned. I believe that hearing both sides of an issue is important, but recently it has gotten out of hand with personal attacks. When it gets there, nobody is listening to reason anymore.

I don't post very often but I come to read several times a day. I have never belonged to an internet group before. I have enjoyed all that I have learned here. When I first found PC I had been thinking of purchasing a Prius for over a year. In coming as a guest for a few months I made the decision to make the purchase. When my Prius arrives I am looking forward to finding out how much they are going to ask for the extended warranty. I Know because of PC that I can get it at cost and that will save me a great deal of money. (I am going to purchase from Troy even if they offer it to me for cost). I have also enjoyed knowing more than the salesmen about the vehicle that they are trying to sell me. I want PC to exist for the people that are still out there and want to learn about this car.

I hope that we can once again respect each others opinions and keep PC alive.

I voted to warn, but what I really meant was "warn each offender once, and then swiftly ban anyone who ignores the warning".

There's plenty of political, sex and religious forums. Add those topics here and you end up with pissing contests. Why bother? Receiving and giving (occasionally) useful Prius advice is what I come here for. I browse the other discussions here when I'm bored and might add a sarcastic comment, but I refuse to engage in these discussions. This is not a free speech discussion but a forum that needs support to survive and must have guidelines that the originators get to dictate. You can start your own forum and build it up to this point and then let others decide how it should progress if you wish. If it doesn't concern the Prius I don't see much point in visiting.

Do you how much of a fool you sound like to post this type of baiting on a thread that is all about the out of control attacks from ALL sides?

Can't you make your own thread?

Really, grow up and stop trolling!

I voted for a ban on people causing problems. I haven't seen the threads that seem to have caused all the ruckus, but maybe that's because I've blocked a few key members that always seem to be trying to get a reaction. There are plenty of user groups on the web for profanity, politics, etc, I happen to belong to a couple. IMHO this isn't the place for that.

    Peace.

But we cannot help but be aware of what's going on if we use "View New Posts" as I do.
To avoid being aware of FHOP means scanning each other forum individually for new posts which is a tedious activity.

FHOP has turned ugly and unfriendly and I avoid it now.
I would set a preference, if it were available, to prevent threads in that forum from displaying when "View New Posts" is clicked.

Do we really want a situation where a large number of members feel so much disgust and hostility that they feel a need to avoid FHOP?

    Being a moderator sucks.

I'm an admin on a huge board, and I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't. I have many friends on that board, and they sometimes act stupid. It is a fine line, and I don't envy Tony and Danny, etc.

In general, I look for the intent more than the action.

Occasional profanity -- no problem, so long as it is not personal
Extreme opinions -- ok, but keep them civil

    trolling -- bad. Moderator warning
personal attack -- very bad. warning to be followed by apology, or expulsion
baiting with personal attacks -- immediate expulsion
    hate talk -- dishonorable discharge

Note to Schmika: calling a post foolish is one thing, calling the person a fool is a personal attack.

I don't think I've ever posted in FHOP. I use "View New Posts". If I see something that I think I might not want to read by the Subject line I don't open it.

I'm not sure what caused this thread but from what I've seen when people were called on their misbehavior they have repented.

I hate to think we are considering censorship. I voted "Other" because there was no "Are you kidding?"

Wow.. I guess I've missed all the action.. I do remember the last time I spent much time on FHOP about 2 weeks ago it was getting intense. So I just avoided it for a while.

I like intense as long as everyone is respecting each other... it promotes good learning and discussion. The moment it becomes "fun" to degrade someone, the person your degrading will never recieve anything you have to say because they don't trust your out for their best interest.

Without going into deep psych social dynamics any further, Fhop I understood to be a place where any subject can be brought up. Some cannot communicate without slamming anyone who sees it different?

The veterans lose grace for the newbies as the forum sucks them dry over time, they start looking to the forum for what it can give them, and despise when they have to give to it.

My feelings are this forum is like any relationship.... if we are all here for what we can get out of it then we need to take a break and get a life.

If we can find delight in helping others then we are in the right place.

I say this "as I say alot of things" knowing I am setting myself up as a target, but at least I'm being honest.

If its not "fun" to be out here, then what we learn and what we teach will not feel profitable.

If we are going to discuss volitile subjects we must realize that we all come from crazy different backgrounds, enlightenments, and teachings.

Since Schmika started this post, I just want to say when he and I first communicated on the forum I misunderstood his speech and became inflamed at his points.
Fortunately he kept his cool and we found that we are both really not animal idiots.
Its the same psychology that goes with roadrage and mass murderers. When we see each other less than us, or less than an animal we have no respect and feel no guilt for condemning and treating others with vile disregard.

Many feel that way about anyone not in thier club. Why? alot to do with pride.

But in banning folks we need to have grace to realize sometime people just communicate "intensely" but with no disrespect.

Others don't realize how offensive they are and just need a warning.

Then others delight in debasing and treating others like they are filthy scum idiots that should not speak until they have studied, read and finally learned enough to have something intelligent to say so as to not disturb thier nirvana state on the pedestal they have placed themselves.

It takes all kinds when you have over 11000 people in one place.

We all come out of our mothers womb and we all knew nothing once... we just need to respect each other....

It makes it hard when some people just seem to "ask for it"!
Some seem to thrive in being the underdog and the attention it gives.

Some go out of thier way to inflame to be the "bad boy" and love stirring the mud. Sometimes thats fun too if we are laughing "with" each other and not "at" each other..... but we are a big family and when people start feeling like they are hated and despised its not good.

I try my best to get along on this forum yet there are a tiny few that seem to disrespect anything I say no matter what.... I just pass them off as jerks. Funny thing is most jerks think thier great!.. They don't realize what everyone else does..... that they are a jerk!... They are usually a legend in thier own mind!, and they will attack anything that challenges that image they have constructed. It becomes thier identity... thier life, their value and thier worth....even though its all a lie.

Some people are so pitiful that even thier own mother thinks thier pathetic?

So I figure I don't have to point it out as it will finally catch up with them and I'm sure they've heard it before anyway.
I just hope that they will finally figure it out.

The people I feel the most protective of are the new folks.

Anyone that tears those to ribbons that can't fend for themselves need to be banned.
If they want to pick on someone.. pick on a veteran or someone who can hold thier own... otherwise they are just a bully and need to be put in thier place... "in the corner".

Life if too short to not get along. We all will die soon and what will be left in the aftermath of our actions?

Profanity has no place here on the forum.

But everybody has a right to express an opinion.

Wow, I guess I missed the fireworks too.

Someone said something anti-Semitic??? . . . NOT COOL!

BUT, am I missing something here?

Aren't these the guidelines for Fred's?:

    Off Topic Guidelines

I hope you can enjoy the Off Topic forum to discuss whatever is on your mind as you go through your day - whether that be politics, religion, your favorite color - whatever!

However, to respect others and to be sure that no hard feelings or improper discussions move outside of the Off Topic forum, there are a couple of guidelines:

    'Bashing' or 'Flaming' :
A quick note about bashing or flaming - blatant off topic bashing of any car type, manufacturer, etc will not be tolerated here on Priuschat outside of the Off Topic forum. This is the Off Topic area which means that you are free to discuss just about anything you want - so please keep any bashing, flaming, or soapbox rants to this OT forum. However, try to make it a discussion not just a bash session.

    Nudity:
Please keep in mind that many of the users of this forum browse it at their workplace or other public places, so nudity or linking to nudity will not be allowed. A "NSFW" tag is not good enough.

    [DANNY]
    http://priuschat.com/Off-Topic-Guidelines-t313.html

". . . so please keep any bashing, flaming, or soapbox rants TO THIS OT FORUM."

So why is it that some are calling for another Off Topic forum? Did they not read the FHOP rules? Do they not like the rules? Not into all flavors of pancakes??? The suggestion sounds a little namby-pamby to me. What's next, a suggestion for a harmonic conversion in the Priuschat Shoutbox at noon for Kumbaya session? Oh, wait! I'm sorry. That may be discriminatory against the atheists amongst us. Sorry.

I think it isn't about liberals or conservatives. Opinions vary, and there is no reason for extreme nastiness. If you don't agree with someone either stay out of the issue or respect that individual's ideas- right, wrong, or whatever.

That 1 thread did get very strange.

I voted for a warning first. That is fair. Why ban someone without a warning? I work with teenagers in school and they get warned about profanity 2 or 3 times before they get written up or thrown out of class. I know adults can behave in a civil manner if they want to.
