Why do I have to keep a pencil-and-paper gas log?

After accidently resetting the trip meter once or twice, I now opt to record the odometer reading at each fill-up, ie: the total kilometers since brand new, to calculate distance per tank. I also reset the trip meter, but it's just for feedback during the tankful, and as a check.

 

I use a simple .xls spreadsheet that I enter data from after the last trip on the last day of each month.
Once I record the figures I reset "trip A" and don't think about it till the end of the new month.

 

I just go to the mobile Fuelly page to enter my info there. It even has a space to record notes for that tank. I also set a link to the page on my iPhone home screen. I believe you can do the same if you have an Android phone.

 

You could always buy a Ford Hybrid and have this on your computer. It automatically logs
and updates the data from every trip and charging event

 

I enter data at Fuelly too, but start with my spreadsheet. Keep in mind, if Fuelly were to fold, or have a server meltdown, there goes your data. I guess the sun would still rise, but just saying, LOL.

 

I also take a picture of each screen with all the totals, and also keep gas receipts.

 

I have kept, on paper, every fill up date, gallons, miles driven on the tank, mpg and odometer readings on my 2000 VW New Beetle since new.
It now has 332,000 miles on it and still when I fill up, my wife has a fit because I am writing all this down and not getting back on the road.
She asked me what I was going to do with all that information and I could not give her an answer..
I think she has a point

 

You can download all your Fuelly data as a CSV file.

Go to the Logbook section on your vehicle page, click on [View All Fuel-ups], scroll to the bottom of the page, then [Export Fuel-ups to .csv]

 

Your not the only one! I have done the same thing for every car I have had.

 

Heck, I'm not only doing that, and have with most of the cars I have ever owned since my teens, but I jot down the estimated EV and trip odometer reading after every charge. Just a touch of OCD.

This is pretty impressive. Good for Ford that they are including all those stats.

 

I think I got it from my dad. He used to have a little book in the car- I think it was called "Wards' Mileage Record" or some such title. I used to buy a bunch of them at a time. One handy thing in the old days was I was able to tell if I needed a tune-up when the commute mpg dropped off a mile or two.
