In my search for a 2013 v 5I have found a new 2012 v 3 in the only color combination that my bride will accept: Blizzard Pearl/ Bisque. She would prefer the Softex interior but that comes only on the 5. Edmund's shows the "Fair Market Price" of $25,700. That's probably at least $4000 less than than the v 5 without the APT, which we are not interested in. As far as I know, there is no difference between the two years.

So, for this price, would you go for a new 2012 over the 2013?

    Thanks!

    Sure.
    It's a new car.
The "Fair Market Value" only comes into play if you go to sell it, and if you're a high mileage driver then it makes more sense to get a leftover car anyway.
If you keep the car for 8-10 years, then the car's "fair market value" will be more of a function of mileage and condition than 1 year of age....and you will have put zero miles on the car during the first of those years.

Buying a car solely on color is kinda like choosing an airline to fly on based on the brand of peanuts that they sell, but you can't place a monetary value on keeping your CFO happy - other than the fact that divorces are expensive.

    Buy the '12.

    Good Luck!

I gave +/-$27,000 for my '13 Level 3, about a month ago. That was about $10,000 less than the tricked-out Level 5 sitting right next to it on the dealer's lot, with the glass roof. I would have preferred the Level 5, as you were seeking, without the glass roof, but the dealer didn't have one, andI could get a nice discount by buying off the lot, at that time. What I'd be thinking about for a couple of thousand difference, is a one-year-later model, and the difference at trade-in time, between a '12 and a '13. Unless you are very price conscious, of course. In that event, the '12 may be more to your liking. As to the seats, I didn't like the imitation leather seats. My cloth ones are very comfortable. I like to sit up high, and have the driver's seat jacked all the way up. They're very comfortable, in my opinion.

Food for thought: If you are financing some part of this purchase, you can get 0% financing on a 2013 but not on a 2012. Over 5 years, that can add up to more savings than what you saved by going with the 2012. So look at the actual final cost of the purchase plus interest before deciding.

Re: color. Most of the paint offered is not to either our liking. We are into neutral colors. Her Lexus is "Bamboo." Classy but neutral. She like the Blizzard Pearl, though the Silver Metallic or Sea Glass Pearl are close seconds. Not much choice on interior. Bisque is first choice. She might consider Misty Gray but definitely not Charcoal.

Re: financing. We might consider financing a small part if we go with the 2013. Whatever works out at 0% to give us a payment of around $250. We'll pony up cash for the difference minus the trade in. If we go with a 2012 we'll pay cash and trade in with no financing.

    Good points, guys! Thanks!

Just sayin', 0% financing is free money. You can bank the cash and let it earn interest (such as it is) for those years.
