Hi Everyone, this is my first time posting. My wife and I are planning to take delivery of a Certified PreOwned Prius next weekend. It has 34,000 miles on it. It comes with a 12mo 12,000 miles warranty and had he remaining time on the powertrain and battery warranty.
We are contemplating adding the extended warranty to it for $850 for 4 year 60,000 miles. It also includes 3 major and 4 minor scheduled maintenance coverage. Given the cost savings off of a new 2013 of nearly $6000, we figure the money would be well invested to compensate for the lack of a new car full manufacturers warranty.
I would like to get opinions from owners of 2010 models on what they saw for repair costs. Is the $850 worth spending, or are we just tossing out money?

    Thanks for your help,

    Scott

My 2010 has 68K miles. Except for a recent seat repair, which was not covered by the extended warranty, the car has only required routine maintenance. Isn't the included scheduled maintenance worth most of the $850? My car is a 5 model, and with all of those bells and whistles, I opted for the extended warranty. Peace of mind, they say.

If it includes the scheduled maintenance it sounds like a good deal.

The Prius is a reliable car. Not much more than routine maintenance is required.

My car is 1 year old and no problems.

Grant it your buying a used car so the Extended Warranty is protecting your investment. In many cases if you care for your car and drive it with care you will be OK.

I had a Honda Civic I purchased new from the dealer. I kept the car 10 years and drove 250,000 miles. Those were mostly Interstate miles and the car was great. Mostly routine maintenance. I did replace the Clutch and Brakes multiple times and a CV boot 2 times. The car was good on gas also.

In retrospect I purchased a BMW 325i from the dealer new. Kept the car 7 years and it was a nightmare. Many faulures some covered under warranty. Huge maintenance costs. Finaly sold it with 110,000 Miles and got 16K in resale.

In my opinion Toyota and Honda make reliable cars. Exceptions sure. But quality is the cornerstone.

I opted for the extended warranty. What I got was the Toyota Certified Platinum coverage. This was recommended to me by a friend who got one too because the car is all electronic from bumper to bumper.

Just recently, my JBL Audio head unit malfunctioned (Navigation, radio, phone bluetooth, voice control, etc) and needs repair. They are replacing it for free instead of charging me an arm and a leg.
