Need Help: Broke 2010 Prius Rear Spoiler

Try epoxy with some backing fiberglass mat or cloth. rought it up really well where you are applying the epoxy.

Hi folks,

I bought the spoiler from parts.com for my 2010 Prius. I wanted to replace the spoiler myself, but needed two people to remove the old nuts, so I took it to a body shop. He charged me $60, but now the spoiler is loose. I took it back to the body shop and he took out the panel and re-screwed the nuts back in, but it is still loose. Any one has any ideas why this would be the case??

Is it really loose, or just a bit? Ours had a bit of jiggle when you closed the hatch. I pulled off the interior panels necessary to get at the bolts, and removed it, basically just to see how it was done.

I'd had one mishap soon after purchase: closed the garage door with the hatch up, and a trailing arm on the garage door scratched the top in one line across top of spoiler, and the back edge of the spooler got a little chewed. Other than that it's structurally sound.

Putting it back I tightened each nut carefully, not super tight, but firm. Since then it has just the slightest amount of jiggle.

 

It's loose probably because you use it to close the hatch. You are not suppose to use the spoiler to close the hatch. There are two interior handles that were designed specifically for closing the hatch without needing to touch the outside at all.

As for as cost for the repair, isn't this an insurance claim? If your deductible is $250 or less, it might be most cost effective just taking it to the body shop and putting in a claim. Just be sure to tell them it happened as your garage door was coming up or down without you being in the car so hopefully it would go in as comprehensive, which is (at least for me) a much cheaper deductible. Of course you could say a tree branch fell on it.

 

Yack, I did the same thing - closing garage door w/o noticing my hatch is still opened. A scratch on my spoiler :<

I paid close to $450 to replace the spoiler, but it is still loose, meaning when I close the hatch, it wobbles, but I am ok with it. My question is, my old spoiler looks good except for the broken clips. Is there a market for my old spoiler. I'd like to put it on ebay and see if anyone bites.. Any ideas folks? I'd be happy to get about $50 for it.

This is why I never park my Prius in the garage. That and the fact that both garages are full of toys and stuff.

 

I've mangled mine too. I got lucky and found a wrecked Prius with a minty spoiler and replaced it.

 

One thing I did, and I have hit the spoiler with garage door once since then (strike two for me): wrapped the trailing arm on the door with a piece of foam pipe insulation. The spoiler still got a bit dinged in this latest incident, and several garage door rollers popped out of their tracks. Great fun!

Anyway, I found Dupli-Color "Universal Black" (NG SF-100) brush applicator works pretty good at masking scuffs. Not perfect, but...

 

I repaired my lift gate handle (also called SubAssy, Garnish, etc) by drilling what was left of the unbroken plastic seat for the bolts and JB Weld'd them in. Works better than new... since the orig sucked.

Remove the interior plastic covering with a screwdriver. No screws just pop clips. Use a 10 mm deep socket to take out 2 bolts. Reattach them to the assembly by drilling the remaining plastic out to fit the bolts in behind the original seat. Tape in place and fill with JB Weld (maybe not even necessary but I wanted to support the bolts more). Reattach bolts making sure the weather stripping is over the assembly and it's lined up. Don't over tighten. Replace plastic trim on inside and you are good to go!

 

So I broke opened my 2010 Prius lift gate - spoiler - sub-assembly. The sub-assembly looks okay except all 5 bolts has broken plastic around them. Out of 2 plastic clips on both side, one is broken.

Currently temporarily holding the spoiler by duct tape. I have ordered the part from parts.com for $325 shipped. Will try DIY to install it.

 

Hi All, letting everyone know that I too tried to drive out of the garage with the hatch open...I am so glad my husband didn’t decide to replace me as some have said on this thread..I found a replacement spoiler at the local salvage yard that was in perfect shape...it took my husband about an hour to take off the trim (after getting tips in this YouTube video -

) then put the replacement spoiler on...he is my hero!!! So to anyone thinking they need to spend $600 which is what the dealership quoted me...don’t, it cost me only $275 to get the spoiler from the salvage yard!
