Volt sets all time record for plug-in/BEV per-month sale

    In fact, it set the all-time monthly record for plug-in sales of any car with 3,351 sold in August, which was an increase of 18.4% over August of 2012 when 2,831 Volts were sold.
    The Leaf also set its own new record for leaf sales. If ford and Toyota just do "normal" it will likely be the best month ever for EV/Plugins.

    I think this shows the price reduction, and having sufficient inventory is working for both the Volt and the leaf. Earlier in the year there were many decrying the inventory levels of the volt .. but if you don't have you cannot sell them.

    1086 is the magic number for ford and toyota plug ins to set a new record in august. That seems easy even in a bad month. Ford has done better than 900 since march when they got production of the fusion energi going, toyota's worst month this year was 628. Even if they both had bad months is will beat december 2012, the previous record.

    The key is really the last 4 months, can the growth continue? It looks like the growth is locked in, but may slow until the new cars get added next year. The mercedes bev, bmw i3, tesla X.

    As to the 4 Ps of marketing, both nissan and gm seem to now have price set where the market and the manufacturers are happy. Place is still a problem but getting better. Many dealers have inventory and aren't selling any cars, while some dealers slow sales because they have no inventory. When we look at the inventory levels they indeed got high on the volts before the changeover for 2014 my, but this was partially because problems with dealers, and partially because of poor logistics, to deal with these dealer problems. As for product, the leaf looks like it improved with its 2013 refresh. The volt seems fine but can greatly improve with a major change with voltec 2.0, but that seems far off. Promotion, I would give the Leaf an F and the volt a D, gm and nissan seem to be fumbling messaging on why people should buy these cars. Word of mouth though should be working for them, it just takes more time.

    Toyota sold 1791 plug-in prii! Record set 9264 (previous 8559), even before ford reports. If ford comes in well we are in line to blow past 100,000 plug-ins in 2013 (52,581 in 2012).

    In the US the prius went on sale in 2000, and Toyota sold 5,600, in 2001 about 15,600, and in 2002 about 20,100.

    In the US the volt went on sale in 2010, and GM sold 326, in 2011 they sold about 7,600, in 2012, they sold over 23,000, and to date in 2013 they've sold nearly 15,000.

    The growth patterns seem similar, are we still worried that Volt sales aren't good enough?

    Some of never were worried. Those that want to bash the Volt will keep saying its different (e.g. gas prices tax credits, etc.) because the they hate it, not because its logical.

    For the first time, Cumulative US Volt sales since launch are, ahead of cumulative prius sales from launch. (Measuring by months, which is still a bit off since the Prius launched in summer, the big selling season, and volt launched in Dec which is very slow season). And of course the Prius had 3 years of history in Japan and a bettery quality reputation so that help them grow quicker...

    It is also intersting to see the Plug-in-Prius following the same trajectory.. so despite its later start and lower sales it too is on a good track.
