When should first oil change be?

I called the dealership and they said the free maintenance only covers oil changes every 10k miles but if I wanted to do it sooner at like 5k, I would just pay for it.

Should the first oil change be at 5k or just wait until the 10k service?

Take your pick. Most folks recommend the first change sooner rather than later.

10k and every 10k after that. Rotate tires every 5k.

Even though it may easily go 10k, and I think going forward after the first oil change I will change it every 10K, I've decided I'm going to have the oil changed on my own dime at the first 5k, then again at 10k, 20k..30k...

On a new car, I just don't want to wait until 10k for that first change.

    That's just me, personal approach...

I rotate the tyres and change the oil/filter every 10k miles. The tyres wear very evenly on this schedule, and it makes for an easy DIY to do everything together.

If you use synthetic 0w-20 oil as you should, every 10,000 miles

If someone uses conventional oil or any other weight oil, every 5000 miles.

Try calling another dealership about doing the first oil change at 5K. Back in 2010 when I got my 5K mile maintenance, I asked the dealership if they would do the first oil change at that time. They said no problem as they would just allocate the cost accordingly. The problem would be that depending on when I did future oil changes, I might have to pay at the end. I agreed. But they might not being doing that any longer. Of course, everybody forgot that I got the first oil change at 5K miles. I never ended up paying anything and still won't until after my last service at 45K miles which is coming up (I have the extended maintenance). Also, along the line, they did an oil change when they weren't supposed to do one, and didn't charge me. I was never too worried because if something ever happens to my car and they look at the prior maintenance done, I'll just say that I brought my car in for servicing at the same dealer every time, so if there's a screw up, it's their fault.

In the end, it might be better to pay for the oil change at 5K miles and just keep everything else on schedule as recomended.

Yea, I could even do the 5k oil change somewhere else and not even tell the dealer. That way my 10k oil change would be covered (and free).

I (DIY) change ours every 8000 km or 6 months. That's very close to 5000 miles. It's the official change interval, in Canada. And the oil spec is 0W20.

I'm thinking about doing my own soon, although at the pace I tackle things, I may be at 10k by the time I get the filter wrench, filter, and oil and time to get underneath the car.

I wouldn't wait to 10K for the first change. Although production improvements have come a
long way, you still have break-in material floating around in the oiling system
I changed mine at 1000 miles on my C and 1500 miles on my C-max. It's cheap protection.

It's not a parent/child relationship. You don't have to Be deceptive. If you wish to do the 5k oil change, the dealer will happily take your money. Many others do it. It's no big deal. I followed the manual and had it done at 10k. My dealer said I could've had it done for additional cost at the 5k service but I declined.

doing the same !! just make sense if you plan to keep the car for some period of time.... my UOA showed quite a bit of metal an silicon from the manufacturing ....

this way the stuff is flushed out during the "break-in" period ... after 10k I will keep the 10k recommended schedule but will change "transaxel" at 30k

If I had a £ for every "when should I change my oil?" thread. I'd have retired years and years ago.

I know we're a chilled out bunch on here, but please! We just had two similar threads about this subject in as many weeks and probably as many before that.

Change the oil as recommended by Toyota or more more often if it makes you feel happier.

    Yeah I am grumpy today.

My book says 10000 or 12 months. I took mine in at just a day under 12 months .. 6500 miles

Dealer said oh no not enough miles. I then show them date purchased ... All taken care of

Free .. Or at least they said they did

    Have a cup of tea.....

I've hung around enough here to realize a lot of new people come in, and they don't use the search function, and/or they think there is some valid feedback possible by asking the question...today....

So yeah, some questions get routinely asked, over and over....

I fully expect another "What Tire Pressure Is Best?" thread....
Another "When Should I change my Oil?"
    Another "Synthetic vs. Dino Oil?"
    and
Another "Is Premium Worth It?" thread....

Some subjects are like the tide...they keep returning.
Also...some of us are Hard Core Prius Chat participants...but search function or not? Even sticky post or not? Most of these people are asking for themselves, and to them? It's the first time they've asked.

Now I was just wondering....when is it best to use the "B" in the Prius?....(just kidding).

official? So the country needs an official oil change interval? Wow and it actually contradicts the oil manufacturer's own 10k mile synthetic change recommendations. Who knew that governments could actually know more than private enterprise ... especially since its to the oil manufacturer's financial advantage to change it more frequently than necessary. And just how many Canadian legislators are there that own huge amounts of oil stock?
    ;-)

^ 8000 km (or 6 mo) is Toyota Canada's official service interval for oil and filter change, in Canada.
