Can I really go 300 miles for around $27 at 40mpg?

With good LRR tires and synthetic oil you can do even better! This last tank I averaged 63.8 on the MFD and 60 by the pump. I paid $28.53 @ 3.399 per gallon. I used a total of 8.395 gallons of fuel on that tank. I drove a total distance of 504.9 miles before I refueled. There are other's who get better mileage than that! The record holder in Japan is over 100 MPG. The Prius is VERY economical. It all depends on how you drive it. Forget 40 MPG, think 45 and higher. Even with the crappy Integrity tires that come stock on the Prius, you can still get 48 out of it without even trying unless you are constantly floor boarding it and jamming the brakes. Buck. Tell us a little about your commute. Typical trip speeds and duration as well as a bit about climate and terrain. Then people will be able to give you a more accurate estimate of what MPG you can reasonably expect. Most people exceed 40 MPG, but there are some people here as low as 35 and some as high as 60+.

I'm a heavy footed driver and I'm averaging 44+mpg in the mountains of TN.

 

I spend $38 to fill up my Prius and I get around 509 miles per tank

 

First fillup since purchase today. $23, 7.3gal of 87, at 355 miles, AND 48.6MPG! (better than the MFD showed it, but I may have messed that up while trying to kill the backup beeper).......I still had three pips, but was nervous about pushing it, since I don't know how the bladder on my car reacts. Soooo loving my new car!

Actually, I felt a bit dumb to use my $.30 member discount on it! I'll get over it.....maybe buy some lawn mower gas, or something! Beats the heck out of the $85+ fills I was used to on my truck......

 

Here's the info I have on the beeps that helped me with '09. You can also turn off the beeps for the seatbelts if you so choose.


1. Power on the car (IG-ON or READY) and using the Trip/ODO button, make sure ODO is displayed (not Trip A or Trip B).
2. Power off the car.
3. Now power on the car to READY (brake on).
4. Within 6 seconds of powering on, press and hold the Trip/ODO button for 10 seconds or more (there is no indication... just count)
5. WHILE STILL HOLDING ODO *after* the 10 seconds, shift the "gear" selector to R, then press the P button. Now release the Trip/ODO button.
6. If the last step was successful, "b on" or "b off" should be displayed in the location where the Odometer is normally displayed (front dash area). "b on" is beep on (default), and "b off" is beep off.
7. Press Trip/ODO to toggle the mode.
8. Power the car off to exit the toggle mode.
9. Good to go.



And to disable each of the front seatbelt warning beeps, follow these instructions:

1. Be sure someone is sitting in the seat which seatbelt beep you wish to disable.

2. Without your foot on the brake, turn on your Prius and make sure you are in ODO mode (not Trip A or B). Power off the Prius

3. With your foot on the brake, turn on the Prius. As soon as the ‘Ready’ light is lit, press and hold the ODO button for at least 10 seconds.

4. Keeping the ODO button pressed, insert the seatbelt that you wish to disable the beep for. At this point, ‘b- on’ should appear on your dashboard display.

5. You can now let go of the ODO button, and each press of the ODO button toggles between ‘b- on’ and ‘b-off’. To disable the reverse beep, simply set it to ‘b-off’, the power off the Prius.

As you have found, the Prius is quite a economical car. It is nice to be able to fill up and have change coming back even when giving the cashier $30.00 Today I filled at three pips 356 miles paid $21.90 to fill up. Price of fuel was $3.259. Very happy with our Prius too.

Thanks guys! After multiple attempts on the backup beeper....it finally lapsed into silence. My car seems to like a lot slower count. The seatbelt beeps have to stay to rat on my kids, though.

I have found a great iPhone app that integrates with fuelly: "fuel buddy". Use it each time I fill up now. Does cool graphs and such.

I just did a 300 mile road trip to help a friend source a used Mercedes roadster.....four really big adults, 70+ MPH in an absolute downpour through the mountains. I was first amazed at my economy at such a packed car (none of us is under 200lbs!).....everyone loved the room. But, OMG! You folks were not kidding about water in the road killing MPG. I only averaged 40.9 once it started coming down.......who knew?.....rain.

Of course....in any OTHER car......it'd be worse. Still absolutely LOVING not being held hostage by my MPG! Freedom!

Actually, if you work at it on a good tank with hypermiling you can 500 miles for $27 ($3.399 per gallon - 60 MPG) It is possible. Other's have done better than that. I have not mastered hypermiling, just made a extra effort on that tank to see what I could do. I could have done better if I would have tried harder.

Enjoy your Prius and smile while the guy next to you is paying $60+ for his fillup.
