It might be useful to track hybrid battery life of Prius Chat participants. Even though the survey results will probably be biased towards folks having battery issues, we might be able to discern trends.

INSTRUCTIONS: Everyone with a Gen2 Prius is welcome to answer the survey. But keep in mind the survey is asking about the original hybrid battery that came with your Gen2 Prius. If you purchased a used Prius, please answer to the best of your knowledge, if you assume your hybrid battery is original. If you sold your Gen2 Prius, simply check off based on the number of miles you had when you sold. If you have time, please also give a brief post on your vote (model year, miles, if battery failed - give us your best guess as to reason if known, also if under 150k miles if you got a replacement under warranty).

Survey is open for 4 months. If the data appears useful, we can repeat the survey in a year or so.

NOTE: This survey is intended to see trends of Prius Chat users only and results are not expected to be representative of the general Prius population.

My 2009 Gen 2 was totaled by a semi trailer at 110,000 miles, so will never have battery issues.

I just entered my data, 190000 km (118000 miles) and no failures on my 2004. Hopefully all forum regulars will vote in this poll so that we get as many data points as possible. :)

Poster from a few days ago...mine failed at 145,000 miles. 2006 model. Driven in city, traffic, freeway, desert, mountains, heat, heavy weight.

New HV battery installed under warranty and all seems good. I thought it might be a refurbished battery, but they said it was brand new.

Yes thank you for chimimg in, very good that you got the batt warranty (CARB state). I will not be so lucky if mine fails at 145k. That's a little bit why I started the survey.

    >>I should amend the OP to say if the HV battery failed, did you get the warranty? Yes in your case! Nice going.

I believe that a question regarding how often the car was driven and average daily mileage would yield a more accurate picture of battery life if added to the survey. It seems that the batteries of daily drivers far outlast those of vehicles driven occasionally. This might explain the cause of premature failure.

There are many factors that influence hybrid battery longevity other than straight miles driven, but it's difficult to survey them all (and there may not be enough data points to even try). Anecdotally it seems that high temperatures and mountainous terrain are two of the biggest factors, though simple calendar age probably plays a roll as well.

I have read many posts that indicate high temperatures are detrimental to the battery life. Living in and driving in the Adirondacks on a daily basis has not affected my battery this far with wintertime temps dropping as low as -35F. Wondering if heat and mountainous terrain vs. cold and mountainous terrain yields varying results. The Prius 3 with the solar package would be a good option for those living in warmer climates as this would keep the temperature of the interior from spiking during midday while parked.

Curious as to how many have / have not had the hybrid battery replaced. Nice survey - thanks for posting!

I think you'll find this is a calendar age issue and not a frequency of usage issue. Put simply, less frequently driven Prius have a higher calendar age for any given mileage.

Yes your point is also right. Once I didn't drive my baby for a few days and the HV battery shwns only three bars and the engine needed to work hard to charge. Glad that the battery back to normal in a short time. So my HV battery is still healthy.

Mileage as of this post 151,259. Purchased used 04/26/11 with 67K on the odometer. According to meticulous records this is the original HV battery. Daily driver, 700 miles a week. Monitor SOC routinely. No indications of large variations in SOC or loss of charge after several days of non-use. Exposed to Arizona heat but keep A/C at 73 F when driving and use windshield reflector when parked. I can hear the battery cooling fan after making the vehicle ready but I've never heard it running at a higher speed. There is a 2000 foot elevation gain from home to work, no steep climbs just regular interstate grade. I drive at various times of the day or night since I work rotating shift. Usually by the time I arrive back home (the more or less downhill leg) the SOC is all green bars.

Original battery now close to 100,000 miles on a 2008 driven most days.

I just voted battery has not failed below 100K miles - - 2007 @ 89,000 miles. I've only had it for a few weeks and don't know it's history other than it was registered in AZ, CA and FL before MD.

At 98,523 miles wouldn't you be covered under warranty?

Thank you for response...interesting pedigree, in the unlikely event your battery fails before 150,000 you will have to give some study if CARB warranty applies to your vehicle. MD is CARB, AZ is not, but possibly the car is CA-certified. At the very least, ask Toyota for courtesy coverage since MD is CARB.
