Twice in the last one week, the Prius has not completed the initial startup process.

I get in the car, press the brake, push the start button. All icons light up and stay lit. I cannot shift to Drive.

Normally, after a second, the icons go away you get the beep, after which one can shift to Drive.

The traction battery is almost fully charged (80%). Don't know if the 12 V battery is good. The car as 43,700 miles

If this happens, I power off the car and try again in 15 seconds. After a couple of retries, the car starts up properly.

This seems to happen when I start the car the first thing in the morning, on cold nights. Could be a coincidence.

    Any idea whats going on?

    Thanks.
    Aloke
PS: Once it gave me an error msg: something like "Hybrid system overheating" .. I forget the exact msg. This was the first thing in the morning on a cold night, so I disregarded this as a quirk. Subsequent incidents have not shown any msg.

When you press the brake pedal, does the Start button go from Orange to Green before you press it to start?

If it doesn't, then you have a bad brake switch.

If the brake switch is bad, then it will be equivalent to pressing the power button without stepping on the brake. That won't power up the display (just power up the radio and cig. lighters).
My displays light up and stay lit (including all idiot lights).

Correct. You might want to take it in to one of those autoparts stores that will read your OBD error codes for free.

Report back with any error codes.

I do not know if a bad 12 volt battery could cause this or not? Might not hurt to check it out.

I have a service call scheduled for this Friday at the dealer.

Could a weak or failing 12 V battery cause this? by not providing enough voltage for the rest of the systems to start-up?

Yes, I would definitely check your 12V battery. If the 12V gets weak you can get some random messages and problems, similar to your issues.

Test the battery voltage after sitting for several hours, overnight is best. Record the voltage, turn on headlights and record voltage again. The first reading should be in the 12.5V+ range. the second reading should be >12.0V. If either reading goes below 12.0V your battery is weak and needs replacing.

Start car and verify voltage goes to 14.5V to indicate battery is charging.

I don't know, but I do know if the 12 volt is bad it does all kind of wacky things with the electronics in the car.

What is the expected normal life of the 12V batt?

It seems around 5 years from postings on here. 4 years is not unexpected.

Can I "jump-start" the electronics if I an unable to start the car if the `2 V batt fails (even to drive it to the repair place)?

    Don't know about gen3 but some gen2 12V batteries go 6 or 7 yrs.

Oh! about 3-5 years, unless it has been drained with lights left on dead battery or some thing, than it could be sooner.

5 years is pushing the envelope.
One thing you might try, is to turn on your headlamps the go through the start procedure. If, when you push the start button the headlights dim substantially, you probably have a weak battery. Just a thought.

It was a bad 12V battery. Confirmed by reading the error code at the dealer.

    Thanks all for your help.

I find it both amusing and somewhat concerning that our cars are "booting up" nowadays (which is a completely accurate description).

I just hope we'll never have to talk about BSODs.

If you have too short a commute, your new battery might end up with the same fate in 3-4 years. The 12V in mine is still the original and doing well and same is the case with my 2007 Camry Hybrid (original 7 year 12V). I periodically (every 3-4 months) hook it up to a low-amp charger for AGM batteries. I use CTEK MUS 4.3 but it uses 4.3 amps as opposed to the recommended 4.2 amps for the Prius 12V. You might want to look here in PC for chargers other folks are using.

It seems to me, considering the light duty the 12V sees in the Prius that, with proper care, it should last a LOT longer than typical starter batteries.

    Thanks Venkat.

My commute is 35 miles one way on the freeway at 65+ mph (they just raised that to 70 mph.. There goes my mileage :(
So, there is ample time for the 12V b to get charged.

The dome lights that stay on are a pain, because of the delayed fade-out of the interior lights on switch-off of the vehicle.
I thought that the Prius automatically shut off the interior lights and headlights after a set time to prevent discharge of the 12 V b?

I saw the thread in your signature on the low voltage cutoff switch. I'm OK with replacing the 12 V b every 4 years as long as I get warnings early enough not to get stranded. A message on the display screen would have been nice.

Rant: Why not have informational msgs displayed on the nice screen? Some idiot lights are mandated, but the same warnings should be displayed on the screen in plain English. There should be no reason to get an OBD port reader in vehicles that have any screen like Prius or any modern vehicle with a display screen.
