I am at the dealership now getting the brake noise problem fixed it is a recall for the 2012 Prius V. I will let you know in a few days if I hear anything coming from my car. It is a recall if you have a 2012 Prius V.

I just fixed it yesterday based on the TSB. The dealer didn't mention it is a recall though as the original brake calipers were working fine.

The update brake calipers should remove the groan/squeak noise.

I don't hear the noise this morning. Yeah!! Will update later to confirm the fix is working for a longer period.

Parts were ordered a week ago, only some have come in

Toyota customer rep heard the brake noise this morning with me driving (for some reason he did not hear it yesterday (I had left the car for him to drive) - especially how much noise the brakes make - he must not be aware of the exact noise because I can't miss it).

So now waiting for the rest of the parts to come in.

Not sure why they are replacing the parts versus grinding them down as the TSB says.

    Maybe that didn't work.

The noise I hear is intermittent. I don't want to waste my time bringing the car in, having some advisor use it to go to lunch and drive home with and say he doesn't hear anything. Unless the noise becomes more than intermittent , I'll keep things the way they are for now.

Most folks have smart phones that can create movies or record sound. For the folks that have a smart phone... just make a point to use your cell phone to record a movie (shows that you were in your Prius V while recording the movie/ sound of the back brakes making that hideous sound. THEN PLAY IT BACK while showing it to the Dealership's Service MANAGER (not a REP)... well ok have the rep there when you play the movie w/sound so both can hear it. Then hand them their free copy of the Toyota Service Bulletin T-SB-0081-13.

Be sure to write down the names date and telephone numbers of the Service Manager and others.. so you can send it to Toyota Corp when you file your complaint. Reassure the manager that's its only "business" not personal and you are only trying to resolve this issue by doing the right thing i.e.. notifying all those other folks in Toyota new car sales business that there is a real concern that needs to be resolved.

Toyota called today to say the parts that were ordered are already installed on my car.

So nothing can be done until a newer fix comes out.

So does that mean the all the cars they have previously repaired will need to be repaired again or

is this a different problem than before?

Can anybody who have had this repair job done verify that their car brake problems were indeed fixed?

    My goodness, people.
Brake noise is not a "problem", its an irritation. The brakes are normally functioning, and ALL disc brakes make noise of one kind or another. Toyota isn't "repairing" anything, they are catering to picky customers.

After 1 week, I am happy that the noise is still gone after the dealer fix.

Mine have been squealing since last winter, but only on cold, rainy days. Only irritating to neighbors, but it quit after a mile of driving. Just mentioned it at my excellent dealer Saturday when getting new wiper refills. They had parts in stock, and 3 hours later, I left with new calipers and pads! Never really bothered me, cause I remember disc brakes in the '70's, but, hey, free pads at 24,000 miles! Thanks, Toyota, I love my v.

Already installed ? The TSB 0081-13 was limited to Prius V's produced BEFORE with VIN number JTDZN3EU #D 3207505.

Your work must have had a more recent TSB # do you have a copy you share with us the T-SB # ?

my VIN number is after the one mentioned in the TSB. My car is newer, but the same noise still exists even with the new parts already on the car when I purchased it. The customer relations person did not know if my car had the new parts until they looked at it. He says Toyota is working on a fix - nobody knows when it will be and he says Toyota is well aware of cars still making the noise in the newer Prius v's.

Yesterday Tuesday 8Oct13 took our 2012 Prius V (4,050 miles) into the shop for its second Toyota Free Maintenance = oil change/ tire rotation and state inspection. I gave the Rep copy of the TSB and a smart phone video movie with the back brake noise. He said they would need to test the car for the brake noise. Later when we went back to the dealership to pick the car up, I noticed that the maintenance invoice had "Ordered Parts for the TSB work" written on it.

Rep did mention the part were expected in Thursday 10Oct / Friday 11Oct. We agreed to return the car on Monday 14 Oct. for the TSB work. Will let forum know the results.

    In: 9:15am
They were able to duplicate the rear brake noise when cold Prius V R&R
    Warranty Work performed:
Replaced rear left and right caliper assembly, Disk B
ground both rear disks (ON CAR)
    Out: 2pm
Warranty covered all the expenses. No cost to owner.

Dealership provided shuttle van service both ways.

Today it is going to rain again. So will test the car in a little while. Have some software work (unrelated) to do first.

I can report that Toyota Australia has a fix for this, which involves replacing the rear break mountings with a newer designed component. After having the parts replaced under warranty, there is no more groan!

This same brake noise is now evident on my 2013 Prius v when it is cold in the morning or evening. I will seek a warranty repair and let you know what they perform.
