let me know how the brakes are after they are done.
You might also ask them to use ceramic brake pads, as my wheels get dirty very fast from the dust.
My 2007 Prius never had this brake dust problem.

Did the July 3 brake pad replacement fix the problem?

Did anyone figure out the problem or fixed it? I just bought my 2013 Prius v, and the groaning noise has happened about 3 or 4 times now. Funny thing is I live in Northern California, and it's summer time too! When it happens the temperature is around 65 ~ 68. I am planning to ask the question when I bring it in for 5k service. But if you know of any recall, please let me know. Thanks!

Toyota sent out a tech to my local dealer and replaced my rear brake pads & calipers with what they said was a new pad material. They said the original pads were found to absorb water when sitting in humid/wet weather but dry out quickly when you drive. I didn't hear the sound for awhile after the repair, it's been hot here. But now after about 6 weeks I did hear a brief groan when turning, I think from the front, so they may have the problem too. We are expecting some cool rain this weekend so I'll see if it happens again.

Yesterday was cool & wet and after sitting at Walmart for 1/2 hour I heard it again but it sounded like it was from the rear again so not sure if the "fix" to the rear brakes actually helped. It happens for such a short time it's hard to isolate.

Maybe no groaning, but we've got clunking on first backing out of the garage (see Sound when stepping on brake first time in the morning | PriusChat). We're thinking of moving to Washington...

I'm also having the groaning issue. It's usually approx 65 degrees in the morning in which the brakes will groan for a few minutes upon driving. Very irritating.

Hi. We have the 2012 Prius v(vee) and ever since we owned this vehicle purchasing it brand new, we had this groaning noise. We purchased in late March 2012 and we are in Northern California. When we took the car in for the regular maintenance and mentioned about this, they checked and said they worked on flattening the brake pad or something in that regard and asked us to see it occurs. It still occurs and like everyone mentioned, it usually occurs in morning or night and for goes away after driving for few minutes.

I'd like to know if anyone has found the root cause and had their issue fixed. Thanks.

We just bought a 2013 Prius v and it has had the noise since day one of ownership. Love the car except for that. I've narrowed it to the rear wheels. Took it in for the first service yesterday and let them know about the noise. I basically got 'We've heard of that with other Prius v's' and that was the end of the that, so I got a car wash and the wheels rotated. Other than that, nothing. I got a call today for feedback on the service and told them I was unhappy about them not finding an issue with it even though they 'knew' about it. Got a call from the service manager after that he tried to tell me it was flash rust and I stopped him in his tracks. I've owned a 2005 Prius and 2005 RAV4 and I know what flash rust sounds like on braking. Then I told him there was an FTS on it and he immediately looked it up and said there was a TSB that came out in June of this year. Unfortunately my vin wasn't in the range. And yet, it's happening to me. But being a good sort he said bring it back in and leave it and they'll check it out and run it up the flag pole to Toyota HQ and see what happens. I'm going to leave it overnight so that they can hear it for themselves. The TSB references temperature and moisture as a contributing cause but I bought this car in Florida and live in VA so it's been doing it all the time after leaving it all night. I don't think that's the issue but I could be wrong. I'll let ya'll know how it pans out.

when the parts all come in, they are suppose to provide me a rental car - I did not ask for one - it's just what they said.

    I am ok without one...

    Hi everyone,

I'm not sure how many of you have read this thread from the very beginning since it's been a pretty long discussion. But my problem with this groaning noise has been solved since April 2013:
    2012 Prius v Groaning Noise | Page 9 | PriusChat

The last time I heard a faint groaning noise for a few seconds was when it was raining heavily a couple of weeks ago, but that was nothing compared to the head-turning noise that my V did before. So the repair is still a full success for me.

I also provided information about the parts that my dealer used to fix my noise.

Well, my story still doesn't have a happy ending. No parts for me! According to the service manager they contacted mother Toyota about my vehicle and they said that not all the affected vehicles were 'fixed' by the TSB parts and that they were still researching on the root cause of the noise, therefore no parts. Coincidentally, I haven't heard the noise until this morning (about 2 weeks since the visit to the dealer). It does come from the rear of the vehicle and this time it appeared to manifest as I pressed the brake pedal rather than just with the initial movement of the car. So, I'm in a waiting mode for now and I'll press the case again the next time I'm in for service. It's more of an aggravation than anything else. Sigh.

T-SB-0081-13 is for 2012 with a BEFORE specific VIN #. Download and Print. Use your cell phone 'record audio of the groaning noise. Present car for overnight trial test next morning , TSB and audio for the service rep for review. They fixed ours without issues.

The work invoice states that they replaced both rear capilars and used an ON CAR grinder to smooth off both disks.

I am not sure if all are aware, but there is a TSB for this, or at least dealers should know about it now. I had the grinding/groaning issue usually during wet periods when first starting out in the morning. First dealer did the resurfacing of the brakes. Didn't do anything. After dealing with it for a while, I took it to a new dealer in my new city (Santa Cruz Toyota). Lucky for me, the noise was happening when they took the car. They found a TSB related to the rear brake pads and calipers. Both were replaced, and the issue has gone away...finally. Very embarrassing to have a new car and people turning to stare like I'm driving a 71 Pinto.

Just got a call from my dealer that they have parts in for the vehicle. I'm pleasantly surprised that they cared enough to keep up with the situation. I'm taking it in this coming Monday. We'll see what develops from this, though it hasn't really made the noise since I got it back from the 5k service (maybe once).
