Is it a Lemon or a Peach??

    With my 1996 Camry Wagon dying, and a commute of 55 miles a day, a Prius seems like the solution. I have gazed over this forum and read lots of advice, scoured CarGuru and the Toyota pre owned page, and found:

    2008 with 66,671 miles for $13,888

    It was on the recall list for Cou and C0t 1.2. It looks like these have been sorted and it has a new Battery. A part of me thinks that it is a VERY good buy with a new battery etc, but maybe it means I should run in the other direction...Please help..I really have no idea about cars

    It had a Lien placed on the car and gives it a 93, as it had one owner and no accidents and had lovely green check marks for everything but the Lien notice.

    Thanks for the help..I wonder what do you think the price should be? It is a Toyota dealership and they claim that they have a bottom line policy, which basically means no movement. I might be able to trade in my battered 96 Camry Wagon and the saleman hinted that they might be able to trade service, I thought p'raps tires?

    If there is no trade in, or service thrown in do you think I should walk away?

    do you know what package?

    they will tell you anything to make a sell. trading in the camry with a minimum value might be good idea if it is in that bad of shape. otherwise try to sell it.

    nada says 12,900 for clean retail non-touring. so alot depends a
    on it shape.

    I have seen the car, but not driven it yet. It is is good shape. It has quite a lot of chips on the hood from stones, but other than a few scrapes, it is clean inside and out. They said they would touch up the chipped paint.
    No details on packages as yet..we have just started the courtship dance.. The stated package is simply Certified Toyota vehicle at the list price. It seems to be $1000 over the price you state, perhaps that is the Certification.

    Should I be concerned that rotors, drive belts, and battery have been replaced? Do you think these repairs+ the stone chipped hood suggests that the car was not treated with kindness by its one owner, but perhaps the Certified Warrenty and the replacements means it is better than new?

    the belts, pads, rotors would be fairly normal and wouldn't be too suspect. dings are typical though it could mean it was driven on dirt roads. that isn't ideal.

    Belts and rotor RESURFACING (NOT REPLACE)/brake pads are probably standard jobs when the dealer sells the car as Certified. The Prius has two batteries - the HV (also called traction) battery cost $2,500 or more and the 12volt cost $250. My guess is this car had the 12Volt battery replaced.

    In general you pay about $1,000 for that "certified" label.

    "bottom line policy" means nothing.
    Another thing you can do is look around on some of the other websites that list autos for sale such as Yahoo or autotrader.com. You will find prices and you can type in all your preferences to see what is available. Even go to the site of the dealership you have been talking to. It is not unusual for them to list the same car at a different price on the web.
