My 2004 Prius with 224k miles is throwing a P0080 code (exhaust valve solenoid stuck high). So, I brought it to the dealer. They just called me saying that the main battery needs to be replaced. My battery graph shows that it's ok and the hybrid functionality works flawlessly.

Do you think I'm being taken to the cleaners?

If the HV battery needs replacing I would expect it would be triggering DTC codes for them to determine this. Have you asked them for any DTC's that indicate the battery? If you can get these codes and post here then you should be able to get some help analyzing the codes.

My 12v battery is about a year old. The hybrid battery is what they claim is bad.

The only code I got was a P0080 from my OBD-II reader. Are DTC codes separate from this?

Have the dealer give you the codes they got, then post them here. Your scanner may not pick up all of the codes. theirs will.

It depends on what OBDII reader you are using. Most can only read engine and emission DTC's. You will need one that can read Prius specific DTC's to be able to read the HV battery DTC's.

Please be cautious with proceeding. What were the symptoms that led to the OBDII scan being performed? This is important...

    Symptoms:
Alert light went off while my wife was driving. When she got home, I read it with my scanner and saw P0080. The car drives like it's not a hybrid (i.e. motor doesn't shut off when stopped at a light, less power when accelerating, revs higher just like it does when battery is low).

Just got off the phone with the dealer. These are the DTCs he said he pulled:
    P0A80
    P3000
    P3015

Quote is $4140.88 + tax less 10% for being a AAA member. He said that it's a day's worth of work. Is this something I can do myself? I'm pretty privy with auto repair. I can change timing belts on traditional cars.

    Thanks, guys.

Are the 3 codes he mentioned (P0A80, P3000, P3015) not visible to a handheld scanner (Innova 3100, I think) I used?

I do not have the Gen II DTC code list but the P0A80 and P3000 is for a HV Battery Malfunction for my 2010. I believe the P3015 will point to the module pair reporting the low voltage problem.

Unless you have experience working with electrical equipment in general and HV DC inparticular, you need to let someone do this that has the experience. The HV battery is 200+ VDC.

There are several shops in your area that specialize in Prius repairs. Others on here can give you the names of these shops.

Evidently not. Most handheld scanners will not read Prius specific codes.

The P0A80 code indicates the traction battery needs to be replaced.

You can DIY if you have patience, time, and take the necessary precautions. If you're careless, you could get electrocuted which will ruin your day.

I'm a licensed electrician as well as an Electrical Engineer. I think I'll take a stab at the labor. Are there any good sources for this battery? The dealer price is just too much for my wallet. I'm in Orange County, California.

Well you should not have a problem changing the battery then. It is not that difficult.

You could try a salvage yard and try to find a Gen II with lower mileage. You could purchase the new battery from the dealer and install it yourself.

There are several options all with pros and cons. Search on here for HV battery replacements.

I asked the service adviser if he was 100% sure that it's the HV battery. He said "yes". If I tackle this myself, I'm hoping that it's guaranteed to fix the problem.

    1. Buy a new battery from one of the Toyota dealers that sell discounted parts over the web. For example,
AutoNation Toyota Gulf Freeway Parts | Toyota Parts Online - Genuine OEM Toyota Parts and Accessories - Houston, Texas
    2. Buy a used battery from a salvage yard, for ~$800 or so.
    3. Buy a "remanufactured" battery, current pricing is not obvious.
    Dorman Products - 587-001

Thanks, guys. You guys are great!!! I'll either do Dorman or the online one. It's $1900 for the online one. That's half the price of the dealer. Dorman is probably cheaper.

I'm guessing a Saturday morning's worth of labor should do the trick.
