It's pretty shameful we give any thought to what those hooligans are doing. It is all profit driven so the slightest falter in potential profits, could cause a company to lose actual value of millions or in this case hundreds of millions. It can become self fulfiling prophecies in some cases. Tesla stocks will rise again, they are like Batman.

Yup, I wish I had some money to invest in Tesla stock.. Its gonna bounce right back up. And continue to go up. Think... If this was a regular gas powered car, maybe a check engine light might come on. That's about all the warning you would get, and the gas tank would explode killing you instantly. Wall Street is stupid. Buy Tesla stock while its low!

I'm curious as to what exactly caused the fire. Not much detail in the reports, yet. Perhaps Tesla will examine the car and make a detailed statement to set things straight, or fix the design flaw if there is one.

edit:my bad, should have did some more reading before posting. Sounds like it was a battery fire. Maybe obvious but i suppose its the only real flammable product on the tesla, unless they were carrying a couple jerry cans in the front trunk cause their truck ran out of gas?

There are millions of miles on the road by Teslas... This is the very first fire.. Id say this was just a fluke lol. All makes catch on fire at some point. I hope they do identify what caused it, fix it, and set a record over the next decade as having only one fire in the history of the company :p

People are taking profits. The stock even after the drop yesterday and today is up 466% over 1 year. This was not a big drop for a stock that is up that much. The stock over reacts to both good and bad news. It dropped 10% recently, but is still up 1.8% for the month. Fiscal crisis, idiots in congress, plenty of reasons to take money off the table, especially if you bought over a year ago.

Considering that the battery pack runs underneath the length of the car, this doesn't look like a battery fire as much as the rubber tires burning. If it was a portion of the battery, it is impressive that it was contained to just the front of the vehicle.

The forbes article that I read said it was a battery fire, but contained to the area under the frunk, and put out by fire fighters (that had a hard time putting it out because it was a battery, but it did less damage than gasoline would have in an explosion (last part mine)).

SInce this is simply a non-injury accident, I don't think it will hurt tesla long term. They may try to redesign the car under the pack for future production if the fire could have been prevented in some inexpensive way.

Tesla said yesterday that it was a battery fire. See yesterday's thread with news links:

All I'm going to say, is watching that car burn, selfishly makes me feel better about the "spots" on my Prius. That's one toasted Tesla.
There's a good chance my problem will buff out.

    It's a non story.

I'm driving in my non hybrid or electric car and hit a metal bar on the road. It rips off the petrol line and the car catches fire. How is that different to the fire in the S? It isn't is it?

Petrol cars would be made illegal if they were released now. Makes me laugh that people worry about EV's catching fire, yet happily sit with 10 gallons+ of highly flammable and explosive liquid sloshing around behind them.

The Gear Heads & EV Haters are pouring out of the woodwork - smugly boasting, "safest car award - HA!!"

    Vehicles

Hmmm ... even if there are over 100 different kinds of cars ... that'd average 1,000 that catch fire for each model. Where's the concern over gas fires? Or are we supposed to be so desensitized to those fires/deaths that we chalk it up to a necessary risk of using gasoline.

Yet the safest car gets crucified? Right about now it might be important to note:
First Tesla Model S Fire Caused By Collision With Road Debris

Too many are wrongly presuming this was a spontaneous combustion - ah la multiple early Volt fires, when in fact, not only did the Tesla WARN it's driver - it notifies him to get out before he may even know there's a problem. You can't do that with gas - because unlike a battery - gas might simply explode. Haters will hate ... but for now, they'll just have to scurry back into the woodwork.

Hill don't feed the anti-ev trolls.

The volt fires were not spontaneous either, they weren't even during accidents. It was entirely a fake story line about batteries catching on fire much later after being damaged in an accident. GM has since given people procedures to discharge damaged batteries. GM did modify the volt design to cheaply reduce risk of battery damage, and tesla may do a similar thing.

    Totally agreed.

This incident is a non-issue. I actually think the Model S did quite well :)

Tesla needs to do 3 things right away, IMHO.

    (1) Have some sort of press conference....perhaps Musk himself should do it, and EMPHASIZE that it was collision with debris, NOT a spontaneous internal battery issue that caused of fire....PR is everything for a startup

    (2) Get a hold of that metal piece right away from fire dept. Then, run the LS 600hL, BMW 750i, Audi A8, and Mercedes S400 over a similar piece of metal. See if those cars' computers issue any sort of warning. Emphasize lack of gasoline leak, explosion, fire intrusion into cabin, or any injury to owner in the Model S. Post videos if any of the above catch fire or explode

    (3) Do some sort of background check on the owner, discreetly. Find out if there are any financial ties to Big Oil, rival carmakers, or stock short-sellers. Involve law enforcement if so.

I agree on the first 2, I would not do 3. The enemies of bevs would be all over tesla for harrassing its owners (even if it was true, which I doubt).
