My Prius replaced my daily driver 6000lb, 13mpg Chevy Avalanche. I've kept the truck for over a year now but we never use it. I posted a for sale ad on Cars Direct for $30 (runs til it sells) and now I'm being deluged with generic spam type emails from businesses that broker cars.

They typically send an email saying they have a "friend" or "client" interested and want to know the present condition with pictures.
doooooood.....that's all there in the ad I paid for!

    Anyone else deal with this?

    Sigh!

I just got another email from this "Jason" with a "friend" that's interested.
This sooooo smells like a scam it's ridiculous....
They want to send me a Cashiers Check for 1/2 the Amount.
Then they say a rep will be by to inspect and test drive the truck and if it passes they will pay the balance.
    Here is the email below.....

    Hello,
Thanks for your mail.My friend has reviewed the issue of sending a large check, with the waiting period required for it to clear and has decided to send you a downpayment cashier's check of $(edited out). When you receive and cash it,you should let us know,so that the agent can proceed to your location to inspect the car.He will also test drive the car in your presence. On completion of this, the rest of the money ($(editedout)) will be paid to you in cash or direct wire transfer to your account before the agent picks up the car.I believe this is a better and simpler option. Please confirm the above scenario by sending your name, physical address and phone number for the downpayment check,so that we can proceed with the transaction.I hope to hear from you soon.
    Jason.

Uh yeah, I'd definitely be contacting carsdirect about that. They need to do something about that. Sounds like they aren't using any CAPTCHA for their "Contact a seller" functionality.

Cashier's Checks are Frequently Forged! Do Not Accept a cashier's check. And if it is ever for More than the Amount on the deal, Know that it is a Forgery!

That is a major current scam going around. Here is how it works.

You put something up for sale. They send you a Forged Cashier's Check for more than the amount of purchase (usually twice as much). They will tell you it was "in error" and can you send them a check back for the difference.

You send them the item and the check for the difference and two weeks later the cashier's check bounces.

These people are working eBay and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they are working Cars Direct as well.

And never give someone the information to wire you money. They can just as easily wire money out of your account as in it.

It's a crooked world out there.
