Sorry about the batt, are you getting replacement under warranty? Sound like you meet 8-yr/100k miles

Yes they are replacing it under warranty thankfully.

Our older Prius is a G2 bought in 2004. It has about 150k miles on the original traction battery and is doing fine so far as I can tell. I have thought about replacing the battery as a preventive maintenance since G3 batteries are cheap these days, but even if 10% of batteries die before 250k miles it makes sense (both enviro and money) to play the odds and let the battery die a natural death.

I should have asked this in the survey, but:
    • Has anyone in this survey with a battery that failed below 150,000 miles had to replace the battery out of their own pocket (not covered by warranty)??
I am not aware of single participant in this survey with a failure below 150,000 that was not covered under warranty. But I forgot to ask so, not sure.

Surely the great majority of batteries have only 100,000 mile guarantee. It is only CARB states that get the 10 year 150,000 mile guarantee, the rest of the US gets 8 year 100,000 miles along with the rest of the world as far as I am aware.

I'm almost positive the opposite is true, and the vast majority of Prius live in CARB states. My WAG is 75%.

In the last four years the Prius has sold in Japan well more than double the total US sales and if you add Europe, Canada, Australia, and the other 80 countries it is sold in that figure cannot be correct.

Last time I checked, neither Japan, Europe or Australia were part of United States or had a choice in CARB.

The poll is not limited to US vehicles, and as I stated in my post (65) the great majority of Prius have a 100,000 mile 8 year guarantee only CARB state in the US get longer.

Sorry, I thought the US market was being discussed. Worldwide I have no idea, mostly because the warranty status in Japan would define the majority.

In Europe, Toyota started a 'battery check-up' program recently. If your warranty expired, you can check it up, if it passes the check-up (i.e. it is in reasonable condition) you get an extra 1 year or 15000 km warranty. Next year, this check-up can be repeated.

I know the modules of a G3 Prius traction battery can be placed in a G2 case. I'm wondering if a traction battery from a Prius 'C' is a simpler swap. Is the case and/or ECU the same ?

Unfortunately the Prius C battery is only 144 volts against the gen2/3 Prius 201.5 volts. The real difference is 20 modules at 7.2 volts against 28 modules at 7.2 volts.

This would make the battery ECU different along with the inverter requiring more boost. I have not seen details of the MG's but I believe they run at a higher voltage than the gen2.
Strangely with the lower module count you could build a complete C battery from one failed gen2/3 battery with modules to spare.

The survey is open to everyone no matter what country.
But in the USA I am thinking we have 50% CARB at least.
Virginia is not a CARB state, so it would be my own "nickel" if my NiMH batt goes now at 125000 miles. I am hoping someone else will pay for the MH if I pay for the Ni.

    Cute ;)

Sporin provided data for 2010 in the US by state that I have recast as a Google SS. The first sheet is sorted by Prius in each state, while the second sheet is sorted per capita. The CARB states are colored in green text, and sums are at the bottom. I over-estimated CARB, and you were very close: About 54% of Prius were in CARB states in 2010.

    Top 10, Per capita:

Does you data take into account the year a state became CARB? I know Washington state adopted CARB in 2009 which means my 2008 Prius is not covered under CARB but 2009 and later Priuses should be covered. I would guess a significant number of Washingtons 32840 Prius are MY 2008 or older.

I think the data is simply Prius registrations by state in 2010; I designated the states as CARB compliant based on their present status.

If you had a Gen2 battery issue under CARB warranty period, I would still recommend asking dealer for consideration of replacing under warranty. If it's a CARB certified vehicle (and I do not know how to tell that) and you are in a CARB state, you should have a chance. My 2006 has a sticker under the hood that mentions it complies with some California vehicles.

I know a lot of folks say Toyota is hard line on this, but if you look at FORD hybrid warranty they say if vehcile is CA-certified and you live in CARB state then you are covered. I think its possible 2006 Prii are CARB certified not sure about 2008.
