I'm interested in the CAN-view but I'm also very cautious about taking the dashboard to pieces.

I would buy version 1 or possibly version 3, for a 2005 Prius without factory NAV.

I've looked at the installation instructions on the website (and Chris Dragon's stereo installation instructions) and I'd like to cross-check with people who have done this.

Am I right in thinking that to get at the back of the MFD to plug in the connector, all that is really necessary is to

    a) snap out the 2 vent panels to the left and right of the MFD

    b) unscrew and unclip the MFD, so that it can be moved backward from the dash?

I realise there may be more to do to place the CAN-view box and run the cables, but I just want to check on access to the MFD sockets, since this looks like the most critical stage for me.

It does get a little involved on the mechanical dismanteling of the panels and both air vents, only as snapped out of the placement, installation of same requires proper alignment and a little push-in in place . The connector for the MFD can't go wrong, is the only one in it's shape and you just push it on, later few screws back to the MFD and run your wires. At Hybridinterfaces you have also a detailed view and instructions on the installation. Tops, 1 1/2 hs start to finish. And the installation is part of the fun!!! ;)

contact Eflier and he'll send you a copy of the install DVD and you'll see it's really quite easy. It's a little more involved than just pulling the two vents as they are interlocked to the other panels but if you watch the DVD you'll understand it's not a big deal.

the instructions are imposing but the entire process only requires removing two fasteners. one screw. its actually not difficult at all. the Prius is the most end-user friendly vehicle i have ever owned by a HUGE margin.

my previous attempts at even the modest of stereo installs were much much tougher than this procedure is. the instructions are very good. dozens have installed CANVIEW, only a very few had very slight issues that were all self-solved.

I've been thinking about this, is your car LH drive or RH, if RH the dissasembly of the dash might be different than the NA Prius. Please advise.

Mine is LH drive. Continental Europe drives on the right.

Thanks to everyone for the reassuring comments. I had a closer look at another set of dissassembly instructions by Eddie Bell linked from this page:
    http://www.metrotpn.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductID=96
This file includes instructions copied from the Toyota service manual, so together with the excellent pictures in Chris Dragon's file one can be fairly sure of what's involved.

I understand better now that the vents on each side of the MFD can't be levered out until the outer dash panels are removed, which in turn require that the vents at the dashboard edge are also removed.

However, I had another idea: for access only to the MFD connectors, is it possible to work through the space created by removing the centre speaker which is clipped into the top of the dashboard above the MFD? I imagine the working space would be very restricted, but is it completely impossible? I'm assuming it would be very easy to unclip the centre speaker.

no room behind the MFD from the front speaker location as there is a large metal structure there. It's a lot easier than most people thing about 20 minutes work.
Edit: the really nice thing is after it was all done and back together, no rattles. Best part!

why would you put it there? every time you want to update the module you have to dissamble the dash to get it out? That makes no sense to me. ???

My question (post above) was not about putting the module behind the MFD, but whether there is access to the MFD connectors through the opening created when the centre speaker is unclipped.

no, there is a large metal support structure behind the MFD
