I complained directly to Toyota about this. There is really no good reason it should stay lit after driving a few seconds. It's annoying and distracting at night.

    ^+1.

Definately no need for it to be on 100% of the time, especially if I can't freakin' use my navi while driving because that causes "distraction". Um, I do have co-pilots every now and then, I guess Toyota wants me to stop long enough in the ghetto and wait for the system to allow me to plug in directions while risking getting mugged/car jacked.

Might as well put a warning sticker on the passenger seat that reads, "Occcupying the passenger seat could lead to damage or dismemberment. This warning sticker replaces the annoying constantly lit light on the dash display."

No it doesn't - its strictly weight based- so if you have groceries on the seat and they weigh too much, the "airbag on" light shows. Then you can move some of them off so that your $1200 airbag won't deploy to save a $35 bag of groceries in an accident.

Separately, we get an annoying tone and a different light if an actual passenger sits there and does not buckle up (probably a different weight limit)- it won't shut up until they do.

This is correct. We don't have this passenger airbag light, nor do we have the function that the light is there to indicate, ie. in our vehicles the front passenger airbag will always deploy if it is triggered, regardless of if anyone is sitting in the front seat or not. We only have the seatbelt warning, both visual and audio, if there is a front passenger and they are not wearing their seatbelt.

Light never bothers me, don't even notice it, too focused on my power indicator and MPG. :)
