My pointing out his “minor grammatical errors, misspellings, and typos†was only done because his OP was complaining about “very poor sentence structure and syntax in the manual†- which was precisely the same type of minor grammatical errors, misspellings, and typos!

It looks as though everyone else here, except you, comprehended the irony. If you would have understood my post, then maybe you would have caught the incongruity of your PC crusade before you sent your first descant post. But doesn’t it just figure that here on PriusChat there would be a Political Correctness zealot in Fred’s waiting to pounce at the first inkling of solecism. (solecism - how’s that for countering your “penultimate†in the battle for big word supremacy?)

If Devil's Advocate were one of our contributors from Japan, or some other predominately non-English speaking county, and doing his best to communicate in English, then my post would have made me look like a cad.

Really Dan, grow a sense of humor. Some day - like last Monday - it may save you from looking like a dolt. And of all places for you to practice your PC PC’ness . . . Fred’s!

    Neutral corners, gentlemen.
Let's not get out of hand here.

I have read and enjoyed Patrick's posts for many months. I too am guilty of posting dry-humored replies with a wry smile unseen by the reader and uninterpreted by the masses. Fortunately, when under attack, others acted as character witness on my behalf, convincing the angry masses that I meant no harm. Using history as my guide, I can not imagine, with any sense of reality, that Patrick would have taken the time to manipulate formatting to the extent of which he did in a blatant attempt to stir trouble. Especially with the peppering of emoticons.

Thus far, I have yet to see any of the promised actual examples of interesting translations taken from the Prius manual. It's possible that Devil's Advocate felt that this thread was beginning to spiral downward and abandoned it. Can't say that I blame him.

Hopefully he’s just lurking and rolling his eyes and laughing at what a mess he started. Either that or he is busy compiling a missive on poor sentence structure and syntax errors in the Prius manual. I bet it must be several pages by now.

    Hey Devil's Advocate,
    Did you catch this one?

    Page 55:
“When returning the seatback upright, be careful not to make yourself hit by the seatback which will bound with considerable spring force.â€

. . . note to self: NO HITTING!!!! Don’t make myself hit by the seatback . . . or anywhere else. The Prius seatback may become angry and bound with considerable spring force and attack me.

Never fear. Your soaring ironical wit was not lost on me. Of course, one could have done the same sort of thing to your post of "corrections" (as you suspected), but it would only have led to further pointless put-downs about spelling and grammar. At all events, I'm through pointing out the rudeness of your behavior, just as I'm sure you are through justifying it to yourself.

I would think it would be Devil's Advocate's place to say if he was personally offended by Sufferin' Prius Envy's reply or not.

When I read them both I thought it was funny because the topic of the post was the manua's spelling and grammatical errors.

If you're thin-skinned, that's fine. But this isn't the place to be thin-skinned for someone else. I'm sure Devil's Advocate can speak up for himself if he feels the need for defense.

I believe the OP did point out that his message should be held to a different standard since it was not intended for publication by a major corporation. I thought Prius Envy's post was juvenile: first, it resorted to spelling and grammar corrections; second, the corrections needed corrections. I objected mostly because some really valuable participants on PC have fairly poor writing mechanics, and I want these people to stick around and educate me.

The manual is not the only place with bad grammar

It flashed by on the screen; I haven't been able to retrieve it; but I know it's out there, somewhere: a sentence on the screen which spells the possessive "it" thus--it's. I saw this the day I picked up my Prius and alerted the dealer, who seemed curiously unconcerned.

I can imagine such solecisms from Ford or GM, but Toyota? What's the world coming to?

I wish I could find that message again. It would be great to find a way of getting rid of it!

Well, to steer things back in the right direction Dan and Devil...would it help if I said I hated you both equally? :p I don't know...how about lightening the mood? I thought the "ribbing" was funny and the timing was perfect. A sense of humor is a must in off topic forums. That's what they're here for. In fact, that's what any message forum has when the admin and moderators know we need a place like this to get out of hand (to an extent of course).

Don't criticize fuschia (sp?), it's the new black!!!!!

Don't criticize my spelling or grammer, I'm an accountant, not a writer. I know how to write down numbers, so I'm excused from poor grammatical practice :p

--Speaking of Japanese, I was curious if these forums include Japan Prius owners! I base this on the offering of 1500watt emergency electric AC on June 2012 for victims of Northeast earthquake/tsunami. this option was offered to Japanese owners but Toyota Global does not seem interested in offering a package to US owners that would like to have this emergency utility power available at a reasonable cost in their US prius vehicles. I also wonder if the Japanese owener that have used this option have any reports on the use of this option? Does it affect the normal vehicle driving? MPG? any other effects?? if anyone knows of any contact with Japan/PriusChat?? please reply. Thanks, Curt (1500watt for 2 days on a full tank of gasoline)
