    Hi guys,

New to prius chat so please excuse any errors on my part.

I drive a 2012 (Gen 3) prius and its TIC indicates that the front tyre pressure max should be 230 kpa (33.35 psi) and rear max at 220 kpa (31. 9 psi). Tyre's are 195/65R15 Bridgestone.

My problem is that when i keep my tyre's at 32 and 31 (front and rear warmed up, not cold ) the car feels a little heavy and i feel as if it wastes more energy.

Could it be that the pressure i'm using is wrong. I've seen others in this forum who use tyres with similar specs keep their pressure at low to mid 40s.

I mostly drive in the city with just 1 passenger

    Thanks in advance

Us tyres are different to Aussie tyres. The conditions are a little more primitive in most areas, however both US and Aussie tyres are all made to internationally recognised specifications. Toyota's recommendations for Aussie Prius are 36 psi front and 35 psi rear.

Having said all that I run my tyres at 40 psi front and rear with no ill effects. Handling is noticeably better and fuel economy slightly better.

Your sises of tyres are so that low pressures can be used savely.
Goal of all the advices is to give the tyre a deflection that dont give damage to the tyre by driving.
The maximum load of a tyre is calculated with use of the sises and pressure at wich they want this maximum load.
Then for up to 160km/99m/h for up to V-speedrated tyres.
I have same sises under my Seat Alhambra in XL with 690kg maximum load AT 3.0bar/44psi.
But yours are probably Standard load with 615kg AT 2.5bar/36psi.
This AT pressure is called the reference pressure in the official formula sheet , I once got hold of, shorten it by Pr.
this is not the maximum pressure of the tyre ( further Pmax) as is given on the sidewall of Standard load and XL/reinforced/Extraload.
Maximum pressure of your tyres is 44 to 51 psi depending on the brand.
Difference between Pr and Pmax is used for higher speed and alighnment ( camber angle above 2 degr).

So all these differences can give that different cars with different sises of tyres and different loads on the axles give other pressure advices.

Also after 2000 the pressures are kept verry high , especially for low aspect ratio tyres ( AR= the 65 in your sises stand for hight is 65% of width of tire) . I have discovered that tyres below AR 60 are to high calculated in their maximum load. If you would put maximum load on a tyre with AR40 fi with the Pr in it , you would measure a deflection of about 25% of the free flexible part of the sidewall, while a 80% AR tyre only 20%.
This 40% AR tyre should only deflect 20% too. To get that you should substract about 20% of the maximum load written on sidewall to get a 17 % deflection , wich I calculated it should only is allowed to give the same bending of the rubber as a 80 AR tyre.

If now the others have such low AR tyres , they need those high pressures to prefent the tyres for getting damaged by driving at the speeds they use.
Your 65% though is not that bad so you can savely use lower pressure .
Higher though is allowed up to maximum pressure , but to high gives discomfort by bumping, and gripp of tyres gets to much lost.
Can all be calculated if you give me the tyres maximum load and kind of tyre for the Pr.
Also from car Max permissable Vehicle weight ( MPVW) and Max permissable Axle Weights ( MPAW) , Empty weight , Maximum technical car speed or speed you sertainly wont go over, Alighnment of mostly only rear wheels . Then I can calculate the lowest save pressure for your situation and give where the reserves are.

P.S. If you see some tires instead of tyres , its becaus I also medle myself in American fora where tire.

Thanks for your answers. Guess i will try and increase my tyre pressure a little.
