    Hi all.

Ever since I had my Prius in the dealership for the most recent brake recall I noticed a noise (which is hard to describe, something like a muffled clicking) when turning and braking at low speed. If I let my foot off the brake the noise seems to go away. This seems to be happening on both left and right turns. Has anyone else experienced this?

    Thanks!

Yes, I have. I keep forgetting to mention it to the dealer. I've noticed it for about a year now and nothing seems wrong, in terms of driving anyway. I notice it the most when I'm turning right into my driveway, slowing way down and applying brakes.

I have the same problem, too! Does anyone has the solution?

Right. I only hear it on very low speed turns like into my driveway, into my community, etc. I think I can also hear it when coming to a full stop driving straight but it's much less pronounced. At first I was just going to ignore it but now I want to know what's going on to make sure there's nothing wrong. I was so busy today I forgot to call the service dept. at the dealer so I left a message driving home. Hopefully I'll get to the bottom of this sometime next week.

I had it as long as I remember. I has been mentioned here several times with no explanation.

Hey guys. Sorry for taking so long to get back to this thread but the dealership service department didn't respond to my initial voicemail. After a week of waiting I called them again, this time I got a person and scheduled an appointment.

Anyway… here's my story. I don't know if this is the same problem you are experiencing. After checking out my car the service advisor told me that the noise is due to a slight build up of rust on the rotors and semi-metallic brake pads. He also said that there's nothing wrong with my brakes and that they are working properly (which was my main concern). The noise seems less now but it's not completely gone. They recommended occasionally braking heavily at low speed to a complete stop to remove more of this build up.

This seems pretty logical considering that the Prius does most of its braking from the regenerative process rather than actually using the physical brakes and pads. Conventional cars probably don't run into this problem.

I don't think Prius has semi-metalic pads. Besides that, I also believe the noise is normal and harmless. I had it for a couple of years now with no bad things yet.

you can also slip the car into N while coming to a stop every now and than to clean the rotors.

Sorry to bring this post back from the dead, but did anyone ever get this problem solved? My car is making the clicking noise from 20mph-0mph all the time. I've tried stopping in "Neutral" and the car is silent. I took it to the dealership and they acknowledged the sound but have no idea what it is since everything on the car is functioning normally. The noise is driving me crazy.

The only thing that would make a clicking noise is a wheel bearing.

I would think wheel bearings would be the issue if they clicked all the time (accelerating & decelerating) but that isn't the case. Only when braking down from 20mph-0mph.

I notice something occasionally on mine and it basically comes out from by the driver and maybe by the braking system. Sort of sounds like electronics or something. Maybe relays or something like that. It happens extremely rarely on mine.

My clicking issue also disappears when I put the car in N. I'm not too familiar with the CV joint mechanics. If we put the car in N, the tranny is disengaged from the motor. If the CV joint is the drive shaft to tranny connection, wouldn't it make noise all the time? Even in N? The only time we get the noise is with the brakes... but it's not the brakes. Ugh...
I wonder if it's something with the way the hybrid system connects. Time for some serious study of Hybrid synergy drive.

It would depend on how the load is applied and under neutral there is less load resisting the turning of the drive shaft, I.e. the momentum of the drive system (engine component rotation) is not competing with the brakes. Typically the CV joint would be noisy when turning but can sometimes be heard under braking conditions. However, I'm not sure and just making suggestions.

I recently jacked both wheels off the ground and rotated them to see if there was any noise coming from the driveshaft. It turned out that there was a noise near the inner cv joint which is connected to the transaxle on the driver side when I rotated the wheels. The noise isn't a clicking but there shouldn't be any foreign noise other than the brake discs having contact with the pads. I believe the clicking wasn't produced because there wasn't a load on the axle. I don't think my CV joints are bad since the amount of play on each wheels (CV joint trouble shooting method) did not display much wheel play.
Either way, next week I will be going back to the dealership to have them do a diagnostic and I will be mentioning my discovery. They are aware of the clicking but couldn't figure out what was wrong without tearing down parts (labor...$$$).
A huge plus is that I'm going to be taking my car to the dealer on Toyota's dime...I called the corporate office and complained to them about the clicking that many owners are experiencing but all dealership can't seem to fix. Corporate will reimburse me $300 towards the diagnostic/repair. The repair should be free since I still have the powertrain warranty. I will update you guys with any findings.

Please let us know the outcome. I also have lifted the car and heard some noise.
Hope Toyota will cover the repair.

I responded to JLPrius3 on a different thread without checking this one..
Hope we hear something. I think I'm going to replace the CV joints, even if it's not the issue, I'm pushing 70k so I suppose it can only help.
