I was interested in getting XM radio installed and integrated into the existing mfd on my 2006 Prius. I've got a few local recommendations for the installation, but the cost is looking pretty high at these places ($500-600 for parts, labor, installation). Most places just won't do the integration; they insist that I need to either replace the mfd with an aftermarket one, or have the XM radio device installed as a separate attachment on the dash (I don't like clutter!).

I was looking at Coastal Dave's site at the XM radio for 2004-2006 Prius, and the price looks very nice for the kit at $299.

    I was wondering:

    a) If anyone has ordered this kit from Dave and successfully installed/integrated it into their Prius? How difficult was it, how long did it take? (I've never installed anything on a car myself so I'm worried I'd screw something up or do it wrong)

    B) If anyone has had trouble receiving orders from Dave recently? I know the site was closed for the first 2 weeks of Feb, but are they officially back up and running now? It didn't look like their home page message has been updated for several weeks.

Would you recommend I do the Coastal Tech route of ordering and installing the kit, or would I be better off paying more at a local audio installation place???

    Thanks!

Here's Metro Toyota's installation instructions to show you what's involved (if that link doesn't come up, go to http://www.laaudiofile.com/bta6100.html and click on the link that starts with Just What We Needed about 1/2 way down).

I guess it depends on how you feel about taking stuff apart and such. I hear that it's time consuming, but if you're handy with tools it can be done at home. I went with the "quick and dirty" method and got a portable XM radio, so all I had to install was the antenna. :)

I installed the XM kit on my 2005, but I got it from www.metrotpn.com, where it was cheaper and since the Coastal site has a bit of a bad reputation.

It's the same radio regardless of whether you get it from Coastal Tech, Metro TPN (which is a toyota dealer), or Prius XM. It's actually the XM radio for a Camary Solara, but since all the Toyota radios are pretty much alike, it works for a Prius too. I assume it would also work in a 2006, but I can't guarentee it. There are some threads out there about an XM radio specifically from the 2006 Prius that will be released by Toyota as an option in a couple of months. You might want to research that.

I installed it myself. If you are even just a little bit handy, you can do it yourself. It will take a couple of hours and you get to remove a lot of dash parts.

If you search through my posts, you will find several of them where I post a link to a PDF that gives very explicit instructions for taking apart the dash. People are afraid of doing it, but it's really not that hard to do. Almost all the panels just pop off and snap back on. There are abbreviated install instructions out there that only require removing the panels on the passenger side of the dash if you have small hands that will reach back behind the radio.

You can find these instructions in several of the many iPod adapter threads on this site. (The iPod adapters plug into the same port on the radio)

I'm not all that handy (except for Ikea furniture), but I do follow instructions (text, diagrams, or a combo of the 2) very well. I'd do the portable XM thing, but I really don't want to clutter my dash area with any parts or bits. My husband's car (04 Accord w/XM integrated into mfd) has spoiled me for having a portable XM installed in mine.

I think I'll do that. As I mentioned above, I don't think I'm all that handy, but I'll give it a try. I am afraid of 'taking apart the dash', but I may be able to overcome that fear. :) I've heard all the rantings lately about ordering issues with Coastal Tech and I don't want to place an order now to have my card be charged but the item not shipped to me until summertime, KWIM?? The price looks good @ metrotpn, and worst case

I figure if any issues come up with me feeling not up to installing it myself, I'll visit my husband's buddies at Tweeter and see if I can pay them to do it. If I'm paying $250 for the kit, I wouldn't have any problem shelling out $100-150 for someone else to bear the headache of installation. And I'd still be saving $100-200 vs. having one of the local shops do everything for me (Al & Ed's in Lawndale quoted $500-600 for the kit + installation/integration). Or maybe a local PCer who has done the installation before and is comfortable doing so could be coaxed into helping me out for some $ as well. B)

    Thanks guys!!!

I'm sure any car audio installation shop would be able to do the install. I installed XM in my 05 Prius and it isn't that hard to do, just scary to take your new car apart.
The only thing I'm not completely satisfied with the Toyota XM is the 10-character limit.
You should look into the Vais SLX.

www.metrotpn.com has instructions for installing the XM radio. It's instructions for taking apart the dash, however, could be more complete.

If you look at the thread that I link to below, which is about the Dension ice>Link, you can find a link to very explicit instructions for taking apart the dash. I highly recommend them. Look in post 17 of that thread for the link to the pdf file.

In post 12 of that thread, there is a PDF file with abbreviated instructions that require taking apart only the passenger side of the dash to plug in an iPod adapter. These instructions would also apply to the XM radio, since it plugs into the same port on the radio.

    Ordered the Dension ice>Link

I'm not sure I understand their product. For $300 you get an interface that allows you to input a satellite radio module (plus the other set of audio inputs)...but the satellite module doesn't come with?? That is sold separately??

Does that mean all the other XM products out there (coastaletech, PriusXM, metrotpn) are a better deal 'cause you get all that's needed for XM reception? For the same money as the VAIS interface? Which is just that, an interface to hook up a satellite module?

Need some help here, what am I missing?

The benefit to the VAIS SLX is that it adds an additional non-controlled audio input. So basically you'd have a line in to your stereo, just like some of the 2006 models.

You're right though....to use it you'd have to also buy a XM receiver, which I've seen for as cheap as $50 from Wal-Mart. I looked into getting this one, but went with PriusXM instead because I believe the Vais one emulates a CD changer and thus has a much less attractive interface.

That's all very confusing! Do the 2006's have the 10-character limitation too? That's not a very big deal to me, I'll accept it as is if that's the case. As long as I get my XM, I'm happy. :)

I thought I read recently that either the 06's do not have the 10-character limitation, or that the Toyota XM install (the one available in April) does not have that same limitation, it allowed more characters than that?? I swear I saw someone post recently who had done the XM installation their 2006, and were pleased to find that the mfd allowed for more characters than in previous models?
