Open Source L2 EVSE

Did not find efficiency or charging loss compare to other big names.

 

Hopefully this comes to fruition as described. Did anyone see the projected cost of a fully assembled unit?

 

$99 for the base level supply unit + $140-$160 for 32Amp 27-foot (8 meter) J1772 cable + Input cables will be priced between $25 and $50. So looks to be around $300+ for the full setup. The 32 amp J1772 cable at $150 is the problem...

 

if you go to the pledge page, it lists all the combo prices. i think a fully assembled unit starts at $100.

 

Ok, didn't click on the pledge page the first go around. They are saying $199 for fully assembled base edition (including shipping), plus $150-200 for both input and output cables. Yeah, that J1772 cable is pricey. I know some of us are pretty capable with electronics and would be up to the soldering, but would be nice to have a pro do this. So guessing around $400 shipped for a fully assembled base edition with decent cables. Good to see prices still slowly coming down.

 

Would we be able to claim the 30% federal credit on this?

Page 3, under "Qualified Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property" doesn't seem to have any language that specific models need to be approved. It reads:

Qualified alternative fuel vehicle refueling property is any property (other than a building or its structural components) used for either of the following.
• To store or dispense an alternative fuel (defined below) other than electricity into the fuel tank of a motor vehicle propelled by the fuel, but only if the storage or dispensing is at the point where the fuel is delivered into that tank.
• To recharge an electric vehicle, but only if the recharging property is located at the point where the vehicle is recharged.
In addition, the following requirements must be met to qualify for the credit.
• You placed the refueling property in service during your tax year.
• The original use of the property began with you.
• The property is not used predominantly outside the United States.
• If the property is not business/investment use property, the property must be installed on property used as your main home.

 

Anyone take the plunge on this? Price and customizable options looks nice. Getting UL listed would be a plus.

They say pre-ordering on their website as of today. But recently (link above still shows) they estimated the preassembled base edition delivered last month in July, the DIY base edition delivered this month. Premium kits were not due out until September. Maybe this has changed or it's showing pre-order to mean back-ordered.

thanks, i saw that. i just don't see the pip. can you use it on any old car? and how long will it take to charge pip?

 

There is not a PiP selection. You just pick the components you need/want. They don't list the PiP, but I see no reason why it would not work. They show only some other vehicles with larger batteries to show how much faster you could charge. Scroll down to the bottom for these. For example, they charge $239 for the assmebled base kit. Then, for example, you could pick a 13' 32A J1772 cable/plug for $129; a 6-foot 14-50P input cable for $49; and a 4-prong dryer plug (NEMA 14-30P) adapter for $49. They say they will install any cables you buy prior to shipping.

Charging will be limited by the PiP, which at 240-volts is just under 1.5 hours for a full charge (same as any other level 2 EVSE you may have used). However, for future vehicles, if they can handle it, you will be able to charge at up to 15kw which is much, much faster.

i would if i didn't have one already. those look greta and the price is right.
