How do I disable the MFD beeps?

    Hope this isn't too n00b a question...

    I've tried searching through Priuschat for the last 15 minutes or so, and can't seem to find the answer, so I hope someone might be able to shed some light here.

    I want to lower the volume of (or, if that's not an option, completely disable) the beeps that confirm your selection on the MFD. For example, if I reach over and press a fan speed on the Climate screen...

    BEEP!

    Switch to "Energy" or "Consumption" mode.

    BEEP!

    I can't stand it. I've gotten quite good at using the steering wheel buttons to navigate the MFD, but there are some things for which I must use the MFD. I find the beep very high-pitched, loud, and annoying, and would love to disable it.

    I know there's a way to disable the reverse and seatbelt beeps, and on a car as eminently hackable as the Prius, there's got to be a way.

    (Insta-followup: I just checked PriusOnline and there doesn't seem to be any way. I hope someone here has an idea other than clipping speaker wires. ;) )

    You haven't specified the audio system you have. Yes, this has been covered on a few threads.

    First, a primer on how the beeps are generated. The entire AV system (MFD, Head Unit, NAV, Amp (did you know there was a separate amp for JBL?) communicate over a network Toyota calls AVC (Audio/Visual Communications).
    When you press a button on the MFD, it sends a code to either the head unit (for non JBL) or amp (for JBL) to produce that beep. The unit responsible for generating that beep outputs it directly to the designated speaker outputs, after the preamp controls.

    On the non-JBL, it has been determined the beeps are sent out to the front speakers only.
    On JBL, it is sent over front tweeters and rear speakers. Not sure if it goes over the center speaker.

    So, it would not be an easy chore to eliminate the beeps unless you eliminate speaker output channels.
    In the thread "Suppressing all beeps" someone did find the code that creates the beeps (as well as a couple others), and a brief discussion on how it might be disabled. One thought was to jam the beep instruction once detected, another was to intercept all communications from the MFD or to the beep generator, and pass only the codes that do not instruct a beep.

    There's definitely a very easy way to do it because I was just able to turn off the beeping when screen buttons are pressed. Hold on and I'll dig up the link I used.
