    Hello!

I recently purchased a 2001 Toyota Prius. I absolutely love it.

My Prius did not come with any keyless entry FOB's, and I am looking at getting a couple. Is this even possible? If anyone has the FOBs for their 2001 Prius, will you please post the FCC ID and part number, so I can find a couple that will work? From what I have found on eBay, the FCC ID that should work is HYQ12BAN, but I want to be sure. My local dealer did not know what it was...

Also, will a remote that has a trunk opener work with the 2001 Prius?

Oh man, I'm looking at it now and it could very well be that ... right at the limit for old-guy eyes. It's made by Denso and also says (I think!) RSS-210.

I got two on ebay and googled the programing directions and prgrammed them myself, either I was lucky or the sellers know they will work for the vehicles they list in there ad. My priuses don't have electric trunk latches.

Hmm, I just want to be sure that I am getting the correct FOB, as there are so many available.

Will you check the FCC ID, and post it here please? The FCC ID has to match up with the car in order for it to be programmed...

Chap, is yours a factory Toyota FOB, or is Denso an aftermarket supplier?

    Thanks!

Ok, thanks to both of you for your help.

I found one on eBay that works!

So, to anyone with a first generation Prius (2001-2003) who is looking for a keyless entry remote, the remote you get MUST be FCC ID: HYQ12BAN

The remote I bought is a factory Toyota remote. An aftermarket version may work, as long as it has the same FCC ID. I suggest getting a remote like the one shown here: Keyless Entry Remote Fob Clicker for 2006 Toyota Corolla With Do-It-Yourself Programming:Amazon:Automotive

with the lock and unlock buttons on the front and the panic button on the back. Note that the actual remote for sale in the link will not work for a first generation Prius, but the style is the same.

The information on the back of my remote is as follows:

    -FCC ID: HYQ12BAN
    -CANADA: 15511021295
    -RSS-210
    -DENSO

If you buy a remote, get one with the FCC ID that I listed. Then, use the programming instructions that vaughnstark777 has kindly shared:

2001 Toyota Prius - Free Keyless Remote Fob Entry programming instructions, procedures for all automotive vehicles

I followed the instructions outlined on the above linked website, and I am happy to say that I now have a working remote!

And as for a remote with a trunk button, one will not do you any good, as the factory Prius did not come with the actuator for that function. I'm not sure if the remote with a window button will work or not.

Nice work and glad you figured it out. Mine came with two non-working remotes that the previous owner gave to me. He had been using the key in the door and the cylinder had worn to where it was hard to open and one of the keys now does not work in the ignition. Only to find out he was not using the remotes cause the batteries were dead. Replaced the batteries and both work great. Talk about being lazy! Oh, went to the dealer to get a back up key only to find that they are $120 since they are chipped. I wish keys would go back to basic so one could replace them with a $5 key from Ace hardware.

I got two blank keys off ebay for $20 U. S. and had home depot cut them to match the old one (they weren't to thrilled to do it but with some coaxing they finally agreed) and if some one needs the programming instructions just google them or resond to this post and I'll get it for you as I don't have them right now.

Some people! Yes, I'm glad I got it figured out as well. I'm thinking mine didn't come with remotes, as it was a state vehicle for the first part of its life.

Great idea, Vaughn! I might get a couple to have a few backups, "just in case". To get a couple extra spares is sure a heck of a lot cheaper than having to replace the ECU, if I were ever to lose them all and get stranded!

Just curious, does one need an existing key in order to be able to program a new one?

Yes, in order to program the new key you start with the existing key in the ignition.

Coastal Technology used to have a device for opening the trunk on 2001 - 2003 Pri. They also had a Cruise control kit that worked with their remote, but they discontinued it shortly after the 2002 came equipped with cruise control.

I can also confirm this unfortunate situation.

I'm glad I found this thread.

I picked up two keyless entry remotes (using the FCC ID above) off ebay. I can't get the car into programming mode though, and I'm baffled. I'm normally pretty good at stuff like this but after 15+ tries it just won't work. Did anyone notice any subtle steps they missed at first?

    1. Do you have a first generation Prius? The FCC ID I listed should work for all first gens. 2004 and newer, probably not.
    2. Did you use the instructions specific to your year from this link:? Toyota>Prius - Free Keyless Remote Fob Entry programming instructions, procedures for all automotive vehicles

    1. I can't even get the car into "programming mode" (indicated by the car toggling the locks after the series of actions). So the remotes themselves aren't an issue.

    2. Yup. I followed those instructions carefully. I found others that specified time frames for each step, but with no results. I found one set of instructions that was slightly different, but those also didn't work.

    Thanks!

Sorry friend, I have a 2001 and a 2003 and was able to, in vehicle, program both with keys from eBay. Wish I could help more.
