Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon...) Wagon (only) MPG - Please Post Your Results

I noticed a significant difference in mpg between 65 and 75 mph. I was quite comfortable at 65mph but the posted speed on I-45 between Dallas and Houston was 75 for much of the way. Doing 65 can get you ran over so I go with the flow. Still got about 43 mph doing 75. No wind, flat terrain. Dry road. Temp in the low 60s. Did not need to do any hard accelerations to get on the freeway.

 

Turn on your emergency blinkers, then the fruitcakes you share the highway with will appreciate you going 65 mph.

 

I have <400 miles on my new Prius V. On a normal trip to dentist, grocery and post office today, I hit the trip computer just to see how it's doing.

33.4 mile trip, 12 miles of it interstate, the rest city driving -- 48.4mpg for that trip. Used plenty of a/c the whole time.

I've had it on the interstate 3 times and get over 51mpg with the cruise on 65mph, every time. But I live in FL where it's warm and flat.

I look forward to reporting in a year from now when it has more miles on it.

I'm also a bit surprised at how much more MPG it gets than the window sticker.

 

Is that computer or calculated mpg?

 

Yesterday was a volatile one. 39 mile drive each way, mostly interstate, lots of hills.
On the way in, temps ranged from -6 F to -13 F. Fairly decent wind, speeds no more than 66
Trip mileage read 35 mpg

On the way home, temps were -1 F to +12 F.
Speeds no more than 55 mph (slick snow and black ice).
Trip mileage read 48 mpg.

 

47 mpg lifetime after 60k miles. I think the actual number is closer to 45 mpg b/c Toyota cheats on the odo.

Although I haven't kept up with the ODO number much, it always appears conservative as compared to the slightly optimistic trip computer number. My ODO number pretty closely matches my Fuelly number.

 

I checked my car speed against a GPS device, my car says 60 mph, the GPS says 58 mph. Ocasionally the road side radars also indicate that the speed in my car is about 2 mph too high. I also checked the computer mpg against calculated mileage based on GPS (not the odo distance) and it came out 2 mpg lower.

One reason I have fairly high gas mileage is that my drive to work is 80 mile, one way. My cold start is only a small portion of my drive.

 

Just picked up my new used 2012 Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon, not an uppercase v) ( 48k mi ) from a used car dealer. Drove it home - mpg was low ( around 30 ) averaged in with previous drivers, service people, etc . Topped of tank ( range and avg mpg didn't reset), reset trip A and trip B. Drove to Pep Boys to get trailer hitch installed. Getting 56 mpg avg A and avg B ( driving for max mpg ). Installed my Thule roof rack with (3) 20' surf skis on the Thule TK 54" Thule Top Tracks I had the dealer install.
About to start driving now and see what kind of difference in mpg the load makes.;

 

Made my maiden voyage with the Thule rack ( Downsized bar width from 58" to 50" )
Drove 35 mi trying to get best mpg. results with rack and 3 kayaks ( 14' - 20' ) about 49 mpg - Lost 7 mpg - not too bad - still more than I should be getting - EPA is 44-40 and 51-48 with smaller Prius - WITH NO LOAD !!!
I'm guessing breakdown would be 1 mpg for bar ( which is easily removable by pushing a button on each tower - assuming there are no boats on it ) and 2 mpg for each kayak - not bad !!! Most people would only be carrying 1 kayak.
Top Tracks are working great - can rock the car by the boats - and have a 42" spread - could stretch it to 48"

 

I've been driving a 2014 Prius v since April of this year and I use ecomodder to track my fuel consumption.


I don't "commute" anywhere at the moment, and most of my miles are either me running errands or traveling to trail heads. We live in a hilly part of Western Washington state since May and I've noticed that this has impacted end to end mileage.

My Prius is a stock v, with no major modifications. Two days ago I added a Thule aero bar roof top rack and ski carriers. We're headed up to Mathow valley for some xmas skiing tomorrow and I'm interested in seeing how that affects fuel efficiency.

 

Just completed a holiday from Melbourne to Northern Sydney. CC was on 113km/h the whole way, no hypermiling, a lot of INST >15l/100km over the hilly terrain, 5 people fully loaded. Quite happy with the results (47MPG)

 

I'm just curious..... The MPG ratings that are being thrown around, are they reading from the trip computer, or..... Mileage/gallons pumped and paid for? I know for a fact that the dash readings are almost always 4 to 5% more optimistic than plain old math on a calculator.

I observe 43 on the dash and use 10.5 gallons to drive 425 miles. 40.47 mpg.

Btw I get 33 mph at 85, 38 mpg at 73, and 40 mpg if I do 60. In the suburbs I get about 42. I have a heavy foot if you haven't yet determined that. My girl friend get about 45 mpg.

All in all, the Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon, not an uppercase) is the most versatile and cost effective car on the planet.

 

I have gotten an average of 45.1 mpg for my first 95,000 miles and am very happy with that. I am about to get new tires for the first time, still using my stock Yokohama Blue Earth tires, probably try the Michelins this time, the Yokos are a little noisy.

 

About 63k miles from a mixture of 80% highway and remainder city/town.
Speeds on the highway usually low 60s, although that goes up on long drives

Joe Bacasse - On this point of MPG readings displayed on the MID/Trip Computer-Lifetime Computer versus those obtained from Per Tank-Full Gallons Pumped/Paid For Measurements-Calculations, IMHO, the best fuel economy numbers to report for use in comparing your fuel economy driving performance compared to mine or to another Prius piloting fellow or gal, are the "AVGxxxMPGs" readings displayed on the MID by the onboard Trip Computer-Lifetime Computer.

While the "AVGxxxMPG" reading displayed on the MID maybe 2%-3% to 4%-5% or some other ?% number MPG Delta value more optimistically generous on the displayed HSD computer calculated MPG-FE numbers, compared to "Actuals," they are similarly optimistic and generous for each fuel-sipping driver, as spit out by the same Prius HSD Computer Subsystem residing in each Prius v (or c or HB or PiP). Therefore, they can be used to assess one's MPG-FE driving performance against oneself, or against someone else's MPGs driving-operating their Prius v, or a whatever kind of Prius.

Measurements-Calculations based on Per Tank-Full Gallons Pumped/Paid For At Each Refill-Fill Up are prone to measurement and judgement errors, per individual driver, each whom "decides" when "the tank is refilled up to 'FULL' at each fill up." Measuring and recording "Per Tank-Full Gallons Pumped/Refilled" is good for determining long term MPG "Actuals" Averages over many "Tank-Fulls," but no so good, accuracy-wise, for precise individual Per Tank-Full Gallons Pumped/Paid For Measurements-Calculations.

FWIW FYI: I have a bit over 30,000-mile on the odometer of my Prius v Five. I drive somewhere around 90% "City-Around Town" (45-50 MPH or Less)/10% Highway (66-71 MPH), and I drive "Hybrid $mart" on the nominally flat terrain of Florida, which has "Very Hybrid Synergy Drive Friendly" Outside Air Temperatures (OATs) about 8-months of the year. My lifetime HSD calculated MPG-FE displayed on the MID is currently displaying AVG53.7MPG.

Finessing 50-ish MPGs out of a "Caddy In A Kimono" that delivers voluminous driver-front passenger space & comfort, Limousine-esque rear passenger legroom and seating space, plus “Dog-Friendly” & "Washing Machine-In-A-Box" sized cargo hauling volume space keeps a smile on the faces of both my wife and me.

 

Gotta say, even with moderate driving in the 'Vegas valley I have never gotten above 37 mpg. city and never above 40 mpg highway at 70 to 75 mph, mostly in cruise.

All cars are not created equal. Some come off the assembly line with "handicaps".

OTOH, I will not engage in "hyper-mileage" silliness B/C I don't want to irritate the hell out of other drivers. I once saw a Prius owner doing just that. He got a lot of honks from surrounding traffic.
At my age time is far more valuable than saving a few cents or braggin' rights.

 

Even in my hilly commute, and not driving Prius silly, winds are harsh, I'm getting over 40 mpg highway with my snow tires still on. I know in the flats and warm weather of Florida, the v gets far better mileage.

 

40.0 lifetime now after two years, and I'm certainly not an econo driver. My lifetime in my 2004 Corolla 5-speed was over 37, and Highway was always 80% at 75 or so.
