cell logger 8s help with operation with a relay

    Ok, have finally got the system working where the cell logger high alarm cuts off the charger AC via a relay.

    I have purchased a rely pcb details below.

    What i have got is a pcb with 8 12v 10A relays with protection for input devices like arduino outputs and open collector outputs, the protection is in the form of fly back diodes and a darlington trnasistor for each relay. You will see a pic of the pcb along with a schematic of one relay and the shematic for the cell log open collector.

    The relay pcb only cost £12 delivered, i couldnt buy the parts for that never mind assemble and solder them into a breadboard. I bought the board with 8 relays on it, in case i mod my system in the future. Relay pcb`s were available from the supplier with 2, 4 or 8 relays fitted.

    The cell log open collector output mus have a 10k resistor fitted inline from the output to the input of the pcb with a +12v supply. The diagram will show what I mean.

    Additionally i have drawn a diagram of how i have wired up my system, may be of use to you.
    It has worked now for 5 charges and works as it should.

    I am really happy i have now got it working. Note, I have not connected up the black wire from the cell logger alarm port. The alarm port open collector opens internally to neutral to cell 1 -ve (so i have read). It works anyway.

    Additionally, just got past the 100mpg mark, very pleased with that with an enginer kit. Averaged this for the last 140 odd miles. really loving the prius and am getting hooked on projects for it, wouldnt mind in the future upgrading and fitting a system like john`s with a duionomite.

    Where did you find that relay board? £ 12 sounds good to me.

    the wonders of ebay, item number 161022342735.

    They sell various boards with different make relays and numbers of relays, search his ebay shop for relay and you will see loads of them. Cost was £12.99 delivered form honk kong, arrived in 6 days.

    Nice double sided board, good build quality, good solder coverage, ( i used to work for a pcb company with solder flow machines), impressed i am with it, especially the price, I priced just the resistors and darlington transistor they worked out at over a £1 per relay set, without the relay, i dont know how they do it for that price to be honest.

    Anyhow, my gain, and it has worked flawlessly now since installation.

    What is the voltage output of the alarm on the cell log device?

    I'm thinking one could maybe use it to directly send voltage to "off" button on a remote controlled outlet (for example Electrician-RC-012-1-TR-009-Wireless-Control-Converter) to turn off power to the enginer kit. Then you could have some sort of timer that sends a quick pulse of voltage to the "on" button, say every 30 minutes.

    it hasnt got a voltage so to say, you have to supply one, its a logic type of output through a transistor inside the unit, the same type of logic that arduino type has

    although i am not using the enginer system anymore i am still using a plug in hybrid kit and 11 cell loggers as a battery monitoring system.
    I now use the following, an opto isolator for each cell logger, this isolates the cell logger voltage from the relay operating voltage and does work really well. so take 12v supply from yourt cell log input (pin 5) add a 4.5k resistor to the output and wire to pin 1 on the opto isolator. Pin 2 from the opto to the red wire of the cell log alarm port. The black wire from the alarm port is not used as it is connected to pin 1 inside the cell logger. Thats the signal supply done.
    The output supply of the opto is as follows. get a 12v supply from the pack, add a 4.5k resistor in line, and wire ot pin 5 of the opto, pin 6 of the opto will go to a 12v relay coil. The other side of the relay goes to 0v where you got the 12v supply fromto complete the circtuit. Set the cell logger alarm port to normally open. now when the cell log eaches alarm pont, the cell log transistor closes, this sends voltage through the opto isolator and switches the opto, allowing the 12v relay to operate and switch off the charger power supply.
    I have done this for each of my 11 cell loggers and it works really well due to the isolation of the cell logger circuit and relay circuit.
    I was having problems without isolation with so many cell loggers operating in series.
    There is a good circuit diagram on endless sphere , this is where i got the info from.
    I used a hobby breadboard where i just pushed the components into the breadboard pcb with the wires to quickly make and test the circuit. It is still in this state until i get time to make a tidy pcb and tidy up all the wiring.
