a few months back I bought a prius 2006 with everything in perfect conditions. Now, since a few weeks back the remote started to fail at opening the car with my hand on the handle or with the buttons, sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn´t. So, I changed the batteries on the remote and it worked just fine for two more weeks, and now, from one day to another, the remote stopped working whenever I put my hand on the handle to open the door or with the buttons on it. I have to use the actual key to open the car and put the remote in the slot to start it. I try changing the batteries again with no luck at all. Also, I checked the switch under the steering wheel and it didn´t work either. I wonder what could it be, any ideas? I only have one remote with one key. Thanks!

PS: The hybrid battery was replaced almost two months ago by the manufacture´s warranty on a Toyota dealer. Some time after that, the remote started to fail, but as soon as the car came out it was working just fine. The car is working just fine with excellent gas mileage.

How old is the 12V battery? Check to make sure it is OK. Does the red light on the fob blink when you press the buttons? Sometimes the buttons get stuck in the pushed position. There could be radio interference issues going on, due to cell phones or other sources. Do the doors lock and unlock from inside the car, using the switch on the door? Sometimes the door lock actuators get sticky.

Definitely, right now, get another fob. It is a huge issue to get a replacement if you lose the one you have. It is a simple thing to get a spare when you have one already.

I really don't know how old is the battery. The light on the fob doesn't blink, I think I've never seen it turn on. The doors lock fine from the inside and with the key from the outside. I order another fob and hope I can get it programmed.

OK. If the little red LED on the fob doesn't blink, then perhaps one of the buttons is stuck on. You have to play with it a bit to see. Or else the fob is just plain dead. Both happen from time to time, although the latter is I think pretty rare unless they get laundered or similar sorts of insults.

Yes, I've played with it but it's just dead I guess. You think that maybe the programming is off or something?

Did you use a new #2032 battery in the key fob?

The fob is not programmed. It's the car that is programmed to accept the fob. If the red light is not blinking, that is a show stopper and it looks like a new one will be required. Anything electronic can fail without warning.

sorry it took so long to reply. But I finally went to the dealership to check the 12 v battery and results that everything it's fine. It was the wrong battery on the remote. I put one the same voltage as the one it already had and it results that was a different size. Like Elaine08 said, there's a specific size of battery for the remote, the # 2032. Thank you all for your input!!
