I'm Prius (Liftback) shopping, and have been looking at both 2013 and CPO models. One thing that's gotten confusing is that the features that are included in a given trim level change from year to year: e.g. 2010's Prius III is different than 2013's Prius III. I got a brochure from a dealer that lays out 2014 trim levels, and I found the 2013 e-brochure on line. Are the earlier Gen 3 trim levels documented somewhere? So far I haven't been able to find listings for years earlier than 2013.

Just look for one with the features you want and don't worry about the trim level designation.

Good point Haloe, no point getting clogged down in comparing each year's trim. Work out what you want Bluetooth and go for it! Whatever you eventually get, you will love!

A quick google search turned up the following info from edmunds dot com:

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2013 Toyota Prius is a four-door hatchback available in five trim levels: Two, Three, Persona Series Special Edition, Four and Five. The "Five" is not to be confused with the Prius V, which is a larger wagon version of the Prius that's addressed in a separate review.

Standard equipment on the Prius Two includes 15-inch alloy wheels, heated power mirrors, a rear window wiper, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control, automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a height-adjustable driver seat, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, an advanced trip computer, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a touchscreen electronics interface and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface.

The Prius Three gains an enhanced keyless entry system, a rearview camera, a navigation system, voice controls, satellite radio, HD radio and Toyota's Entune system, which includes real-time information (traffic, weather, fuel prices, sports scores) and a suite of apps that connect the car to Internet sites like Pandora, iHeart Radio and Open Table through your smartphone.

The Prius Persona Special Edition is similar to the Three but includes 17-inch alloy wheels, charcoal/black "SofTex" (synthetic leather) upholstery with red stitching and dark chrome interior accents.

Stepping up to the Prius Four reverts back to 15-inch wheels but gets you automatic headlights, an eight-way power driver seat, heated front seats, SofTex upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a JBL sound system with eight GreenEdge speakers.

The Prius Five features 17-inch alloy wheels, foglamps and LED headlamps with auto level control and washers.

An optional Solar Roof package for the Prius Three adds a sunroof and a solar-powered ventilation system that keeps the car cool to limit the burden on the air-conditioning system. It's also offered for the Four, and then includes a head-up display, Safety Connect emergency communications and an upgraded navigation system with a high-definition display and split-screen capability.

The Five's Advanced Technology package adds adaptive cruise control, a pre-collision alert system, a lane-departure warning system, Safety Connect, a head-up display and the higher-quality navigation display.

Available on all trims is the Plus Appearance package, which adds unique 17-inch alloy wheels and a seven-piece aerodynamic body kit. To this the Plus Performance package (availability depends on trim level) adds a sport-tuned suspension and unique badging.

For the 2012 model trim differentials you can go here and scroll down: 2012 Toyota Prius Hatchback Review | Edmunds.com

For 2011, just adjust the year in the Url above in your browser window (i.e. change the 2012 to 2011 and reload).

Thanks all! The problem seems to be pinning down desired features when a car is listed online or at a dealership only as a "III" or a "IV" or whatever. For example, I'd like to get one with 3-door smartkey and rearview camera. In the 2014's, that would be a III. So I told a salesman yesterday I was interested in a CPO III, but after we walked to the other end of the lot to do the test drive, we discovered the car only had one-door smartkey. Neither of us knew what year the III got 3-door smartkey, so we didn't know if it made sense to look for a later year's CPO III. It'd be great if I could know those things in advance to avoid confusion. And also, for example if the 3-door smart key is only available in top trim levels prior to 2013, and I'm not interested in the other high-end features, then I'll want to rethink my options.

The Edmunds link is a big help, thanks for that! But I'm not sure how complete it is - I don't see the smart key details on there for some reason.

    Hmmm....

From what I understand, you can program any smart key to open all doors at once. Do a forum search, IIRC, someone in one of those threads posted the procedure as to how it's done.

You can program the car to unlock all doors when the smart key is used, but some trim levels only have the sensor on the driver's door.

Thanks again! My interest in the 3-door smart key is that my cars are essentially trunks-on-wheels - I'm usually moving big armloads of stuff into or out of the trunk. In my 'ol key-style Corolla, when I end a trip I pop the trunk, lock the car doors, go to the trunk, put on my backpack and fill up my arms, close the trunk - and it locks automatically. I rented a Prius this weekend that had 1-door SKS, which was set so the drivers door opened all doors. But I discovered that in order to lock the trunk after getting out of the car and loading myself up like a mule with the trunk's contents, I'd have to either fumble in my too-many-keys pocket for the button on the keyfob, or walk over to the drivers door and touch it. The latter option is harder than it sounds, because once I'm loaded up with a backpack and big boxes, it can be pretty tough to squeeze between my car and the one next to me to get back to the driver's door.

So it seems like while the 3-door smart key would make loading stuff in and out of the trunk a lot easier than a manual key, the 1 door SKS actually makes things harder - and worse - might make it easy for me to forget to lock the car after closing the trunk.

Is there anything I'm missing here? Some sort of workaround? On the surface it seems like the 3-door vs. 1-door SKS shouldn't be such a big deal. But the way I had it working on the rental this weekend, it really did seem like something I wouldn't want to constantly do.

Thank you haole man. I just checked, and there are sensors on both front doors and rear hatch on my '08, so evidently the option has been available for a long time. When I approach the hatch with the key fob it opens after pushing the unlock button on the key fob. Is that what is called the "enhanced smart key system" on the Gen3?

If you have the sensor on the passenger door and the hatch, you shouldn't have to press the button on the key fob. There's probably a setting for that in the settings screen on the MFD. I don't have the manual in front of me right now, and I'm warm, comfy, and old so the probability of me walking out in the snow is pretty low. If nobody else chimes in with the answer, I'll look it up tomorrow. The whole point of the smart key is that you don't have to pull the key out of your pocket or purse.

I don't think you're missing anything. I have the 1-door SKS and that's what I have to do. Since the dealers are often confused about trim levels, you should specify a 3-door SKS before go out to look at it.

If it's any consolation - the 2004 trim levels went all the way from package 1 thru NINE !! :p
A couple years later Toyota got a bit more sane. BTW, the OP did good thing there, posting your avatar / City location, because a trim level in another country will be not even available in another country. Some folks fail to mention they're in (for example) the UK, and yet the person in Ohio wonders how it is they have features the dealer never told them about.

Nice link. Looks like the 3-door smart key was available on the '11 four also, as well as incl. in some of pkgs on earlier models. Guess you'd have to either look for the 3 sensors or ask a salesperson to take a look and report back to you on whichever model you happen to inquire about.

Yah, the three-door smart key was on various trims of Gen 2 too. It has apparently migrated around the trim levels over the years. I think in the earlier Gen 3's it showed up in the same trim level as leather seats, which I really don't want. So guess I'll try to look for 12 and 13's in Prius III.
