I've been having this problem on and off for a while now.

It happens mostly in cold weather (below freezing usually). When I park, turn off car and take out keys the key alarm beeps to remind me to take out the keys even though I already have. If I don't do anything about it quite often the car won't start the next day.

I have found however that if I start the car and reverse and go back into the spot, turn off car and remove keys sometimes the sound stops (though usually after multiple attempts). Occasionally I have to drive it for a few minutes to stop it from happening too.

Any ideas on why this would happen? I've had my car need a boost probably about 3-5 times in the past year and a bit mostly(I believe) because of this.

    Thanks in advance

I'm sure others will chime in as well but it sounds like you need to replace your 12v auxiliary battery ASAP. Lucky for you that streetsideauto.com has a special going on the Optima yellow top for around $147 shipped. I ordered one earlier this week and hope to install it this weekend.

Sounds like you need a new 12 volt battery to me. Details on how to replace it can be found in my signature. It is a DIY job if you are mechanically inclined. Don't pay the dealer to do it, unless you want to spend about $300

How much are the batteries? Do i just get a normal one from Walmart?

Also I read in another topic that its bad to boost and be booted by other cars ive been boosted by a car twice and boosted a car once...might that have something to do with it?

Oh just saw your reply Gorilla97 thanks for the price....so I'm guessing its not a Walmart Canadian tire trip for a "normal" car battery then

Not sure about Canada. There are other batteries that work, do a quick search on this forum and you will see a lot of threads on the subject. Not sure if streetsideauto.com ships to Canada or not but might be worth it. I know Pepboys in the US will also sell the Optima battery.

If you have to keep jumping the battery it is toast and needs to be replaced. Most likely you have the original battery and it's well past it's useful life.

Unless your car has been modified, the battery that is in there is what is called a AGM type battery that has the small JIS posts that are reversed. It is also a sealed vented type battery since the battery resides in the cabin. The batteries that are available today that fit your Prius would be the one from Toyota, a "Yellow Top", also Exide markets a battery for it. I don't think you will find one at WalMart. You can expect to pay anywhere from $125 to $175 for the correct battery depending on the source.

I am attaching a file to this post which details how to change that battery.

Save yourself some money and do the job yourself. I am disabled, have COPD and still was able to do it.

One other note: Jump starting a Prius is risky business. If you ever reverse the polarity, you will be facing a potential four digit repair bill. You only get one shot at it. Way too many horror stories here on PC about folks jumping off their Prius and then having problems after that.

I have a question. My 2006 has been doing this for 4 years and I found if I just let the car idle a minute or so before shutting it off (all acessories off), I avoid this problem.
What would you guyz consider the life of the battery anyway? thanks
