Accelerate in HV and coast in EV. Gas mileage will suffer but it gets your job done without disconnecting battery. You can smile after your next full charge.

You could go uphill in EV and go downhill in HV to achieve the opposite. How you drive and what fuel gets used when, plays a huge role.

Good to know, can't wait till summer go thur a tank of gas and get my EV ratio up to, oh! say 50-60 starting EV. Then I'll be Goooood!

That brings up an interesting point. I wonder if the software caps it at a certain distance.

Last summer I did the (almost) 100 miles in EV run on Tioga pass in Yosemite. My EV estimate only went up by a mile or two on my next charge. So yes, the car does keep track of when and how much you actually charge and how far you go. Going long distances in EV without charging (from the wall), somehow, get discounted.

I have a 2013 PiP in HI. I started out with an EV range of 14 and it has steadily climbed to 18. I have been getting 120 mpge. My son in AZ also drives a 2013 PIP and his EV range stays close to 12, but he also gets around 120 mpge. I was worried about the high EV range I was getting but was assured it was reflecting driving style and not battery problems.

I think part of the problem is that the PHV starts in EV mode by default, adding to the confusion. If the default mode was HV, people would have a different perception. The EV default mode makes the car behave similarly to an EV with a range extender, and this leads to an unfavorable comparison to the Volt.

First time I've heard someone worried about his EV range being too high! That's a problem most of us would love to have, especially this time of year.:)

You may live in the one State outside of California with more PiP friendly weather!

what is the furthest you have ever driven in ev, (ice cold and never comes on) and what was the average speed and outside temp? my highest range and actual are around 17 in optimal temperatures, but my range estimate has never been higher than 16.5 or so.

maybe so, but i would have been extremely disappointed if the pip defaulted to hv and fired up the ice every time i wanted to take an ev only trip.

Well, my EV mileage is reset to 14 miles. When the body shop worked on the car, they disconnected the 12V battery.

It also cleared the fuel mileage average I had going for the month of December.

I had a similar experience after my accident. Not only was the 12v disconnected, but the hybrid battery was removed during repairs. It has taken 3 months to get my estimated range up to 14+. Even doing a lot of EV driving (1070 total miles on the last tank) didn't seem to help much.

Has anybody actually tested the accuracy of the estimated range? I've always taken the number with a big grain of salt.

Anyways after almost 2 years of driving, my range has consistently been 17-18 miles... recently as high as 19.

As a matter of fact I have. Had 12.7 miles displayed yesterday. Drove 10.2 miles and ran out of EV. Temp was 49F. It's consistently less than estimated. Speeds between 45 and 55 mph.

So, I guess I should take the estimate with a grain of salt as well.

Well summarized, it's a plug-in hybrid and MPGe is the measure of energy efficiency. Both you and your son are achieving high efficiency (120 MPGe combined?) but probably in different ways depending on style, terrain, traffic etc.

. It's interesting how the estimates vary from one car to another. Mine has consistently been 13.9 and others can hit 19.
